We are excited to announce this new opportunity to join the Department of Student Activities as our Student Development Specialist III. The position is responsible for supporting the oversight, advising, and administration of programs in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (OFSL). OFSL provides organizational support, advising, and training to 55+ fraternity and sorority organizations at Texas A&M to enhance the leadership development, civic engagement, health, and safety of chapter members.

This position will serve as the primary advisor to the Multicultural Greek Council Advisor (MGC) and serve as a coach to a portfolio of chapters from all four governing councils. This position will also serve as a liaison between inter/national organization, the local chapter and the University. Additionally, they will be the lead coordinator for designated operational enhancements and initiatives for the office, with an opportunity to supervise a graduate assistant. Overarchingly, the ideal candidate has a passion and drive for building and developing the fraternity and sorority experience.

Salary: Commensurate based on hire's experience

Professional Development: $3,200/year budget starting in FY24 for professional development opportunities and conference attendance

Position Details: General office conditions with the majority of time spent in contact with students. Ability to work nights and periodic weekends as needed including some overnight. Employee will supervise (1) Graduate Assistant

  • Non-Teaching (GANT).

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Three years' experience in student affairs work or related specialty are, with two years of experience in Student Affairs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years as an Student Development Specialist II

  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field

  • Experience as an advisor to Interfraternity, Panhellenic, Multicultural Greek, or National Pan-Hellenic councils

  • Formal academic or organization advising training or risk management training

  • Significant student group advising, leadership training, and experience in the specific area(s) and duties described in this position description

  • Ability to establish collaborations with on-campus academic and student affairs departments, community and inter/national partners

  • Knowledge of the influence of social constructed and college student development on student behavior and decision-making

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) Advisor
  • Serve as the primary advisor for the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC). Responsible for supporting the advising, administration, education, and training of programs for the fraternity and sorority community. Responsibilities include advising student leaders, chapter members, and chapters; attending MGC meetings and programs; attending chapter meetings, as needed; understanding laws, policies, and procedures; providing education and training for chapters; enhancing accountability and risk management practices; ensuring strong financial practices; and providing support to MGC in understanding other infrastructure needs such as student travel, document reviews, inventory management, risk reviews, etc. Establish and maintain essential communication channels with both educational and non-educational agencies.
  • Community Support
  • Provides support for council activities and associated inter/national fraternity and sorority chapters, effectively managing council operations - including budget, risk management, accountability processes, and evaluation of effectiveness of programs. Serve as a coach to a portfolio of chapters from all four governing councils. Serve as a liaison between inter/national fraternity, chapter and the University. Coordinate and support annual programs that support the development students, advisors and stakeholders.
  • OFSL Team Member
  • Supports initiatives within the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life including goal setting and strategic planning, assessment initiatives, stakeholder management, development initiatives, and marketing. Keep abreast of issues and best practices related to fraternity and sorority life. Enhances and maintains relationships with alumni, headquarters, advisors, umbrella organizations, etc. Serves as the lead coordinator for designated operational enhancements and initiatives for the office.
  • Supervision
  • Responsible for hiring and training Graduate Assistant-Non Teaching, as well as their direct supervision and evaluation when available.
  • University Service
  • Serves as an integral member of the larger Department of Student Activities and Division of Student Affairs team through service on university, division, department committees, and/or taskforces. Perform other duties as assigned.
