UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is currently seeking Limited Part-Time Student Behavioral Associate for various inpatient units. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, this role will assist with the provision of medical and psychiatric patient care. The incumbent receives practical experience relevant to their formal education track and career goals. These positions are located at the Oakland location and the shifts are rotating, day/evening/night, weekdays, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the nurse and other direct care staff in the provision of physical care and clinical intervention as assessed by client needs.

  • Attend a minimum of 1 unit based of Institute wide in-service yearly.

  • Documents in the medical record according to established policies.

  • Encourages patients to perform or assists them in the performance of activities of daily living.

  • Learns and utilizes up-to-date technology and practices in the delivery of patient care.

  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment.

  • Maintains on-going communication with the treatment team and charge nurse regarding observations of patients, medical and behavioral symptoms and the care provided.

  • Manage crisis situations effectively using positive approaches.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and other activities.

  • Takes initiative to ensure that unit environment is maintained.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Current full-time enrollment in an accredited school in healthcare related baccalaureate (Psychology, Counseling, Biology, or related field) OR

Current full-time enrollment in a diploma, associate, or bachelor level nursing program.

  • Preference in hiring will be given to nursing students. Preference in hiring will be given to students enrolled in psychology, counseling, behavioral health science and social work programs.

  • May in the course of their job duties be in rooms where medications are stored.

  • No contact with medications is allowed. In the course of duties may be asked to distribute medications to the nurse at the bedside.

  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

  • Comprehensive Crisis Management

  • Must be available and agree to work weekends and holidays.

  • Must be able to work overtime as required by WPIC.

This position will work rotating shifts, including holiday and weekends shifts. The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and a member of the care delivery team. The Professional Staff Nurse is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Professional Staff Nurse has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of nursing care. The Professional Staff Nurse manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The role of the Professional Staff Nurse encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Professional Staff Nurse establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.
