Position Summary

Student Office Assistants are the initial contact and represent the Undergraduate Advising Center to incoming and current students at Lamar University. While on the phone or in person, Student Office Assistants are required to be courteous and make positive first impressions. They work closely with the Undergraduate Advising Center staff, students, and faculty. Student Office Assistants are responsible for answering phones and emails, taking messages, and making appointments. They interact with students who come in for appointments, answer basic questions, assist students with paperwork, and handle correspondence from various sources. Student Assistants also pick up and deliver mail to the university post office and various departments.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist with answering phones, taking messages, and making appointments.

  • Operate and maintain standard office equipment.

  • Assist students with questions and referrals to campus resources.

  • Filing and organizing: Drop/Add forms, Grade Replacement forms, and student correspondence from various sources.

  • Copying, sorting, scanning and organizing.

  • Deliver and pick up the departmental mail at the university post office. Deliver mail to various departments.

  • Assist in keeping the office organized.

  • Other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a registered student at Lamar University.

  • Must be of good character and possess a strong work ethic.

  • Must respect confidentiality where necessary.

  • Student will be needed to work in the summer.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Ability to multi-task.

  • Dependable and professional.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Ability to interact and serve individuals from diverse cultural communities and backgrounds.

  • Good listening skills.

  • Self-motivated.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference given to someone with 30 or more earned credit hours with at least 1 year prior experience as a student assistant.
