STUDENT ASSISTANT - MUSIC THERAPY INTERN

The Department of State Hospitals-Napa, Rehabilitation Therapy Services Department has an intermittent-actual time worked vacancy for Student Assistant-Music Therapy Intern. Please contact the music therapy internship director at DSHNSH_MTInternshipDirector@dsh.ca.gov with any questions.

This advertisement may be used to fill multiple vacancies. Position will be filled based upon budget approval.

Applicants possessing experience working with adult patients in a psychiatric and/or forensic facility are preferred. Expectations for entering internship include completion of coursework towards a degree in Music Therapy with the anticipated completion of a bachelor's degree or equivalency from a university with a program approved by the American Music Therapy Association.

Founded in 1875, Napa State Hospital is the only state hospital in Northern California for persons struggling with severe mental illness. Classified as a low to moderate security facility, the hospital has a bed capacity to treat up to 1,362 patients on an attractive campus with treatment units located on 138 acres. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Please submit three (3) letters of recommendation. One (1) must be from your music therapy advisor and one (1) from a clinical music therapy supervisor. These letters must include an assessment of your interpersonal skills, music skills, and knowledge of music therapy practice and procedure. The third letter can be at your discretion (though no relatives please), perhaps a music professor familiar with your musical skills, or a professor who can attest to why you would be a good candidate for our internship program.

  • Signed and dated verification of eligibility for internship from your academic supervisor.

  • An evaluation of competency form completed by your academic supervisor.

  • Current resumé or CV that includes practicum experience

  • Audition

  • Please video yourself and include a link to the videos in a document. Submit this document with your application. Demonstration of musical skills through the following:
  • Play your choice of 3 different major keys with a I-vi-IV-V-I chord progression on keyboard and guitar using different musical styles. Improvise vocally over one on each instrument.

  • Play your choice of 2 different minor keys with the same chord progression on keyboard and guitar. Improvise vocally over one on each instrument.

  • Sing two songs with self-accompaniment on either keyboard or guitar.
