Job Description and Duties
Undergraduate college students who are first generation and/or from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for this opportunity to gain hands-on-experience with a small State agency focused on protecting and enhancing the San Francisco Bay. The internship program offers students a chance to learn and develop a foundational understanding of San Francisco Bay coastal science, policy, and management work. Interns will engage in projects that directly impact the Bay, its shoreline, wetlands, and surrounding communities. Additionally, interns will have opportunities to participate in multi-stakeholder events and public meetings. BCDC staff and mentors may provide support for resume writing and interview preparation. Selected interns may also receive college internship credit, subject to their university's criteria.
The BCDC Internship offers a 10-week, paid opportunity encompassing experiential learning, multidisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, and professional development. Interns will have the chance to work within the Regulatory, Planning, or Administrative units, and they will be asked for their preference. Throughout the internship, participants will actively acquire skills, expand their knowledge, and gain insight into careers in coastal zone research and management.
Interns will engage meaningfully with industry professionals, including BCDC Commissioners, local agencies, and community leaders, to understand the principles and diverse approaches to coastal zone management.
This is an intermittent, limited term position as a State of California employee. 3 positions available. Salary will be commensurate with the level at which the position is filled.

Working Conditions
This position will be eligible to telework two (2) days per week, in accordance with the Telework Policy, and will be required to report to the office as needed.

The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) is a State of California government agency located in the City of San Francisco with regulatory and planning responsibilities over San Francisco Bay, the Suisun Marsh, and along the Bay Area's nine-county shoreline. BCDC is guided in its actions by state and federal laws and its regulatory policies. BCDC protects hundreds of miles of shoreline, collaborates with local, regional, state and federal agencies, and helps develop the San Francisco Bay Trail and the San Francisco Bay Area Water Trail. Finally, BCDC leads the Bay Area's regional rising sea level adaptation planning.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
An actively enrolled rising junior or rising senior college student in good academic standing is preferred (a current GPA of 2.7 and higher is preferred, but not required).
An individual with high potential and the desire to learn more about San Francisco Bay, climate change, shoreline conservation and development, and how governments work.
A highly organized and motivated individual who has demonstrated creative problem-solving skills.
The ability to research and analyze problems and make recommendations based on research and findings.
One who can work independently and collaboratively as part of a team in both a professional physical office and/or a virtual environment.
An individual with strong communication skills.
Technically adept with frequently used software tools including the suite of Microsoft Office 365, and potentially Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and statistical software.
Experience and/or willingness to learn how to organize, analyze, and manage large amounts of data, and how to prepare charts, tables, and reports for use by non-experts.
Interest in learning about of general concepts and principals involved in environmental justice and equity issues, including community outreach and engagement strategies.
Familiarity and/or general knowledge of vulnerable communities in the Bay Area and working with low-income, diverse populations.
