Job Title: Student Assistance Specialist Revised Date: June 7, 2024 Department: Instruction FLSA Status: Exempt Work Year: 185 +10 extra days Salary Schedule: Certified

SUMMARY: The Student Assistance Specialist is for the purpose of developing and implementing effective strategies that support junior high and high school students displaying threatening behavior or struggling with at-risk behaviors and in need of support in Laramie County School District Number One. This role will work closely with school staff, families, and community organizations to provide a range of services that decrease recidivism with violence, drugs and alcohol use/abuse.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty/functions satisfactorily. Job Tasks Descriptions

  • Identifies students who display threatening behavior and in need of support for violence, use/abuse of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco/vaping.

  • Assists in locating students who have dropped out, entered the court system, or have entered an alternative program for the purpose of contacting them and determining if they would benefit from outreach services in anger management or substance abuse intervention.

  • Utilize preventative practices within the MTSS framework and tier 1 level of supports for students.

  • Collaborates with staff at individual junior high and high schools for the purpose of creating cohesive plans that assist students and their families as they identify needs and interventions specific to each student at the tier 2 and 3 level of interventions in the MTSS framework.

  • Collaborates with administrators and staff to coordinate programs within the MTSS framework.

  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, trainings and seminars (e.g. community agencies, BIT/HOPE meetings, administrative meetings, families, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and gathering information regarding a wide variety of subjects required to carry out their responsibilities.

  • Collects and interprets data on violence, substance use/abuse for the purpose of identifying students who benefit from the services provided by an outreach program.

  • Collaborates with district staff to providing students and staff with support for the purpose of identifying traditional and nontraditional avenues to earn credits for graduation.

  • Designs materials for the purpose of providing information and guidance to families regarding violence, drug and alcohol use/abuse.

  • Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic records (e.g. action plans, activity logs, phone logs, referrals, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing up-to-date reference and audit trail in compliance for Wyoming Department of Education reporting associated with legislation for the K-12 Mental Health Service Grant.

  • Facilitate parent meetings, workshops, forums, surveys for the purpose of conveying information, problem solving concerns, or gathering stakeholder input around violence, drugs, or alcohol abuse.

  • Provide resources for staff, students, parents on the process and curriculum to service students in need of support for violence, use/abuse of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco/vaping.

  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and committees for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable with program guidelines.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's Degree in related area of student mental health.

Master's Degree in related mental health or educational field.

Experience working with junior high or high school students.

Experience in working with Community Service and Outreach preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

Criminal background check required for hire.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:

Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals.

Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, etc.

Operating knowledge of and experience with office productivity programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail, etc.

Operating knowledge of district information technology systems and department-specific software and equipment required within 3 months after entering position.
