Position Summary

This position is responsible for working on all types of transportation structures and performing activities that significantly impact the design, analysis, drafting, construction, and cost of transportation structures throughout the State. The responsibility of this job involves professional and/or technical engineering judgments and discretion in completing projects and performing development activities.

This position works on projects and performs activities involving civil and structural engineering design systems; bridge design manuals and design standards; structural research and design projects; and performance of structural engineering services which develop statewide policy procedure and standards for transportation structures. WisDOT personnel and engineering consulting firms depend on the results of these projects and activities to enable them to design, analyze, draft, and construct economical transportation structures throughout the State. This position is responsible for engineering projects from development through completion.

This position communicates with other State DOT offices, the Federal Highway Administration, Canadian DOT offices, county personnel, engineering consulting firms, other outside agencies in addition to Wisconsin DOT personnel with regard to civil and structural engineering design systems, the Bridge Manual and Standards, structural research and design projects, policies, and procedures. This position acts as a technical consultant to the Structures Development Chief and engineers in the Bureau of Structures, State personnel outside the Bureau of Structures, engineering consultants, county personnel, and engineers in outside agencies.

Salary Information

The Senior level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $82,846 to $101,421, plus excellent benefits.

The Advanced level is in schedule-range 14-13 with an annual salary of $96,387 to $108,950, plus excellent benefits. Plus, an additional $2,080 per year for a Professional Engineer License.

A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Job Details

WisDOT does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

Certain positions within this Department may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process.

For permanent positions that allow remote work flexibility, Wisconsin residency is not required. However, it is not anticipated that working outside of Wisconsin (or bordering cities) will be allowed because positions may at times need to report to office locations in Wisconsin on short notice.

Qualifications

Minimum requirement: Upon hire, candidate must have graduated, or will be graduating by December 2024, from an ABET accredited college or university with a 4-year degree (or Master's or PhD) in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field, OR possess an Engineer in Training (EIT) credential, OR possess a Professional Engineer (PE) credential.

A minimally qualified candidate will also have at least 3.5 years of professional experience post-graduation in design, construction, or maintenance of transportation structures (structures are defined as bridges, culverts, sound walls, retaining walls, or sign bridges).

In addition to the above:

To be eligible at the Advanced level, candidates must have a valid Professional Engineering (PE) registration and the ability to obtain a Wisconsin PE registration within 3 months if PE registration is from another state.
