Responsibilities

The Structures Department is responsible for evaluating the structural integrity of National Security Space hardware, both spacecraft and launch vehicles as well as civil and commercial systems. Members of the department have a strong foundation in solid mechanics, practical experience in structural analysis using both hand calculations and finite element analysis techniques, a passion for the space industry, and a desire to apply their expertise to help solve a variety of technical challenges.

The Structural Systems Section is responsible for assessing structural integrity of hardware such as pressurized hardware including requirements definitions, design review and assessment, simulation and analysis, test planning and monitoring, review of as-built hardware, and support of anomaly investigations. This section is also responsible for advanced concepts and technology development including multifunctional structures and structural health monitoring. This section works closely with other engineering departments in conducting multi-disciplinary analyses to ensure mission success and to assist with developing future systems.

Key Functions
Identify, evaluate, and resolve structural design and test issues, anomalies, and challenges across space structural systems
Perform and/or coordinate detailed structural analyses to identify failure mechanisms and modes
Develop and assess design criteria, requirements and specifications for pressurized systems and mechanical interfaces
Perform critical assessments of structural/mechanical designs and development plans during preliminary and detailed design phases of space vehicle programs, participate in development of analysis and verification plans and monitor contractors analysis and test programs
Offer technical consultation and advice to management, customers, contractors and government agencies in formulating and assessing test plans, procedures, objectives and success criteria that contribute to the development and execution of test programs for development, qualification, and acceptance of structures as well as provide real-time monitoring of test execution
Perform critical reviews of flight hardware pedigree prior to launch and evaluate and assess all risks
Initiate the development of advanced concepts and technology for structural design, test, and evaluation
Develop technology roadmaps for the transition of advanced concepts and technology including additive manufacturing
Maintain state-of-the-art skills in activities related to design, evaluation, and testing of space structural systems
Take initiative to inform management of perceived technical problems and recommend courses of action and then, coordinate activities with both inter-organizational personnel, program office points of contact, and customer contacts when necessary to scope, plan and resolve technical issues
Document work in accordance with corporate standards and provide timely technical recommendations to line management and customers by means of technical briefings and reports

This position could be filled as a Member of Technical Staff or a Senior Member of Technical Staff.

Qualifications

Required for Member of Technical Staff
Advanced engineering degree in structural analysis
Skills and/or coursework in the following areas:
Finite element analysis
Strength of materials
Experience giving technical presentations and writing technical reports
Some travel to contractor and customer facilities
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required

Required for a Senior Member of Technical Staff
Advanced engineering degree in structural analysis with at least five years of professional or educational exprience
Experience in the following areas:
Finite element analysis
Strength of materials
Experience giving technical presentations and writing technical reports
Some travel to contractor and customer facilities
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required

Preferred
Experience in design, qualification, and nonconformance assessment of pressurized systems including:
Pressure Vessels
Composite Overwrap Pressure Vessels
Lines, Bellows, Valves, and Manifolds
Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue Analysis (Damage Tolerance/Safe Life Analysis and Fracture Control)
Additive manufacturing design integration, evaluation, and assessment
Welded joint mechanical properties and analysis
Nondestructive inspection criteria development
Bonded and/or bolted joint failure criteria and analysis methodologies
Composite structure failure criteria and analysis methodology
Probabilistic analysis and uncertainty quantification
Structural stability margin assessment

The Structural Analysis Engineer will support the F/A-18 Product Definition and Post Production teams. The ideal candidate will support analysis activities for production of the aircraft and new expanded capabilities and products and existing aircraft undergoing service life modification. Support the Structural Analysis team working on design changes to extend the fatigue lives of known critical parts and the overall airplane and designing a new Conformal Fuel Tank. Activities include a significant amount of coordination with the Navy customer. Responsibilities include structural analysis for both metallic and advanced composite structures. Tasks include classical hand static analysis, finite element model use and development, structural integrity evaluations, and durability and damage tolerance assessments. Responsible for all types of structural parts as well as assembly analysis associated with installation of these parts in the F/A-18. Basic Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) from an accredited university or higher. * 5 years' of experience in structural analysis. * Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance Preferred Qualifications: * Structural analysis experience on aircraft structure * Familiarity/experience with FEMAP, Patran, and Nastran FEM tools * Experience with fatigue and durability and damage tolerance analysis. * Experience with MS office with VBA programming skills. * Ability to effectively communications and work in a collaborative team environment.
