Department Summary

We are the Auxiliary Maintenance Team within the Maintenance division of UNT Facilities. Our team performs the routine and preventative maintenance that is vital to the resident and dining experience within our resident halls, dining facilities and many of our Sorority chapter locations. We work in close coordination and cooperation with our partners within the Housing and Auxiliary Services Department to make residence life our number one priority. Auxiliary Maintenance is a culmination of several trades including structural, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and access control. We currently maintain facilities across 15 resident halls, 6 dining facilities and 7 Sorority Houses plus the Center for Sorority-Fraternity Life and the UNT Welcome Center. Our goal is to provide the most reliable, efficient and outstanding service to our residents, who rely on our maintaining their living and dining spaces so they can focus on their education. We take great pride in what we do and strive for excellence in service daily.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for skilled craft and supervisory work involving the construction, repair, and maintenance of University structures, fixtures, and furnishings. Work involves planning, laying out, assigning work, supervising maintenance and skilled craft technicians in the maintenance and repair of building structures and fixtures including cabinetry, furniture, plumbing and lighting.

  • Receives work assignments through written job requests, plans, sketches, and blueprints.

  • Plans, schedules, assigns, and supervises the work of Facilities Technicians engaged in carpentry, roofing, plastering, painting, electrical and plumbing maintenance.

  • Coordinates work with the mechanical, electrical and plumbing crafts.

  • Requisitions supplies and materials.

  • Maintains records of materials and labor expended on each job for cost accounting purposes.

  • Checks and approves work orders after they have been completed.

  • Interviews and selects individuals to staff the department.

  • Arranges for outside contractors when needed.

  • Oversees training for the development of assigned personnel.

  • Supervises skilled Facilities Technicians performing work involving new construction, remodeling, installations and repair of cabinets, shelves, doors, windows, roofs, floor covering, walls, fixtures, and equipment.

  • May operate planers, band saws, hand power drills, sanding machines, and other hand tools of the trade.

  • Drives University vehicles to and from work sites.

  • Observes safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed and work supervised.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma/GED equivalent and five years' of experience in related maintenance/repair field. Substitution of education for experience allowed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of methods, practices, tools, materials and supplies used in cleaning, maintaining, repairing and servicing equipment and of the operating principles of related mechanical assemblies.

  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.

  • Skill in locating and adjusting defects in equipment.

  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair.

  • Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Plumbing or Electrician License
  • Journeyman or higher
  • 3 years prior supervisory experience in a Higher Education or commercial housing environment.

  • Experience in supervising 10 or more people.

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Possession of a valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment; ability to drive a vehicle and maintain coverage under University liability insurance policy, if required to drive University vehicles.

Job Duties:

  • Reviews current work management data daily and assigns jobs to technicians as needed according to the urgency of the request.

  • Collaborates with manager to ensure that customer needs are met by providing feedback/reports when requested.

  • Coordinates work with mechanical, electrical and internal crafts and vendors, obtains supplies necessary to completed task, check and approve work as needed.

  • Ensures that all vehicles are physically inspected and are ready for department use. Creates a schedule of preventive maintenance for vehicles

  • Consistently completes expected duties in a timely manner without constant supervision. Accepts responsibility for own work and follows through on commitments.

  • Reviews, interviews and selects new candidates for open positions and completes and forwards all necessary hiring paperwork.
