Purpose:

The Structural Specialist CL1 Carpenter Apprentice will gain knowledge of and perform skilled rough and finish carpentry work in constructing, remodeling, repairing and maintaining buildings and facilities such as office remodeling/renovation, office, conference room and classroom conversions, wall erection and removal, cutting and patching associated with piping and wiring installation, door installations, carpet and flooring installation, A/C installation and removal, window weatherizing, etc. generally under the guidance/direction of a Structural Specialist CL2 Carpenter. Work may also include assembling scaffolding and staging as necessary to reach work areas.

The Apprentice will gain knowledge and develop skill in the maintenance and upkeep of shop equipment and hand-held and power tools. Starting pay for this position is $13.82/hr.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

1.Assists and develops skill in interior and exterior carpentry work for construction, remodeling, repair and maintenance of the physical assets of the campus.
2.Assists and develops skill in both rough and finish carpentry.
3.Assists and develops skill in erecting, dismantling and working from scaffolding and at heights.
4.Participates in training to read and understand building drawings and diagrams and may produce sketches as needed.
5.Assists and develops skill in the construction of furniture, such as benches and picnic tables.
6.Develops and applies skills in operating power and hand tools associated with the carpentry trade.
7.Assists with the maintenance and upkeep of shop tools and equipment and learns the appropriate methods of performing such preventive maintenance tasks.
8.Develops and applies knowledge in requisitioning materials and supplies from Central Supply.
9.Develops skill in working independently with minimal direct supervision as part of on-going skill development.
10. May learn the necessary components of estimating carpentry jobs.
11. Responds to emergency calls and performs trouble-shooting as needed under the direction of an in-house carpenter. Will become an active member of the callback team upon completion of training.
12. Participates in training and adheres to all relevant local, state and federal safety and regulatory requirements and policies and all University policies and procedures.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.


Knowledge, Skills &

Qualifications:

1.Interest in the carpentry field with the goal of obtaining the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful and transition to a Structural Specialist CL2 Carpenter position required. Familiarity with carpentry work. tools and equipment a plus.
2.Demonstrated initiative to continue to learn and develop skills in the commercial/institutional carpentry field.
3.Ability to perform fine motor skill tasks and to use hand tools to perform work necessary.
4.Ability to lift and carry up to 75lbs up a ladder necessary.
5.Must be comfortable asking questions, receiving direction from multiple staff members and actively participating in the learning process.
6.Must possess a work history which demonstrates consistent and reliable work habits.
7.Must be able to comfortably work in tight areas, from heights and from a squatting/stooping position.
8.Must be able to perform manual labor and physically demanding tasks regularly.
9.Experience working as an effective and cooperative member of a team and perform hands-on tasks.
10. Must possess effective communication skills and the ability to work comfortably with people who possess a diverse array of skills, knowledge, abilities, and backgrounds.
11. Valid Maine driver's license required.
12. Home phone and reliable transportation required.
13. Ability to be on campus within 45 minutes of being called required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment includes building interiors and exteriors; frequent exposure to circumstances which may cause injury to self or others, working in extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, and may also include unpleasant odors, fumes, dust, and poor ventilation. Position requires lifting up to 75 pounds, climbing stairs and ladders regularly. Position also requires standing, kneeling, stooping, climbing, crawling, balancing, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, grasping, feeling/fingering, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

WORK YEAR:

Full-time, regular 12-month appointment.

WORK SCHEDULE:

Monday Friday, 7:00am 3:00pm, with overtime and callbacks required.

POSITION TYPE:

E&G Funded, on-going hourly position.

SCHEDULE FOR EVALUATION:

In accordance with the Service & Maintenance Unit Agreement.

WAGE BAND & STEP:

Wage Band B21, Step 2

The finalist for this position must successfully complete all appropriate pre-employment background checks.
