back shop environmentJOB SUMMARY
This hourly position is for the leading of a team for Aircraft
sheet metal mechanics. The duties include the responsibility to supervise
a team and direct project flow. This position requires extensive
knowledge of aircraft structures and sheet metal tools. Job duties will
vary each day and will encompass projects as coordinated with the
Program Managers and supervisors. Will be required to work independently
and lead multiple projects.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONScustomarily and regularly direct the work of at least two other
employees in daily work and project management for completion of
projects. This responsibility includes the requirement to give
suggestions and recommendations about jobs and tasks.Supervise a team and direct projects on aircraft and related systems.
This shall include but not be limited to the responsibility to supervise
a team in moving and installing panels and components and repair work on
sheet metal and other items.Troubleshooting and evaluation of systems on the aircraft as needed.Oversee inspection and evaluation of the aircraft and components as
needed.Oversee the movement of aircraft.Supervise the maintenance and repair of shop facility, equipment and
tooling.Work independently on projects and lead multiple projects.Any other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor or management.JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or equivalent.
Lear Jet experience is a plus
4 years prior experience on aircraft.Self-motivated
Process work with minimum supervision.
Lead and provide incentives to other team members.
Attend work every day as scheduled to include overtime and weekend
assignments.
Notify supervisor in advance of shift starting if unable to work.
Must have reliable transportation to get to work every day.
Perform all work under Federal Aviation Administration
guidelines.
Follow all company and safety rules during the performance of duties.
Maintain customer-oriented work habits.
Direct the work and flow of multiple projects.
Lead team members in daily operations and duties.
Professionally work with others.

VIEW JOBS Job Description As a Sheet Metal Worker, you will first be qualified through the shipyards state of the art welding school. The Sheetmetal Department is a highly versatile team of craftsmen that are responsible for fabricating, assembling and installing a wide variety of Components on Aircraft Carriers, Submarines and other Surface Ships. These Sheet Metal components include, but are not limited to ventilation systems, metal joiner bulkheads and framing, furniture, cabinetry, lockers, ladders and handrails, foundations, weapons spaces and wet spaces. As a sheet metal worker you will perform work governed by detailed technical work documents and procedural guidelines. The tools of the trade include a variety of hand tools and power tools/equipment to include drills, rivet guns, grinders, miter saws, band saws, nibblers, plasma arc cutters, rollers, shears, press brakes and CNC fabricators. The Sheet Metal Department will provide formal and on the job training (basic sheet metal/tack welding) as well as any job specific training requirements. The Marine Sheet Metal Trainee Program is a joint partnership between Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, Workforce Development and several local Virginia Community Colleges. The purpose of this program is to prepare a trainee to perform work in fabricating or assembling sheet metal products in a shop environment and/or installing a wide variety of sheet metal components on Aircraft Carriers, Submarines and other Surface Ships. You will learn to work with a variety of hand tools and power tools; including, but not limited to: grinders, miter saws, band saws, nibblers, plasma arc cutters, shears, rollers, drills or drill presses, rivet guns, , press brakes and CNC fabricators. All candidates are required to complete a Newport News Shipbuilding job application. Offers of employment will be given to those candidates selected to participate in this program. The offer will include several contingencies including drug screen, physical and background check. Once the candidate has cleared the drug screen and physical they will be accepted in to the program. This training program will be for 2 weeks at Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth, Virginia from 7 am to 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday. If selected to participate in this training program, then the candidate will need to complete the college's enrollment process and pay a $250 tuition fee to Tidewater Community College where the training will take place. With the completion of the training program, along with meeting all other contingencies previously mentioned, the candidate will be a hired as a Sheet Metal Worker and given a start to work date through Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia. Once the employee starts to work, they will be reimbursed the $250 (subject to tax withholding). As a Sheet Metal Worker, you will also attend and be qualified through the shipyards state of the art welding school. Basic Qualifications Candidates must able to work at extreme heights or small confined spaces. Must be able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb. Must be able to lift 40 lbs and must take and pass a respirator fit test. Must be able to work assigned shift as production needs. Must be able to pass Physical Agility Test.
