  • Design bridges, retaining walls, and related structures;

  • Conduct structural analyses, develop calculations, and prepare contract documents (plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates) in accordance with state and local agency requirements;

  • Responsible for independently working on bridge design projects and other transportation-related structural design and analysis projects;

  • Evaluate, select and apply standard engineering techniques for design of steel and concrete structures;

  • May conduct site inspections and other responsibilities associated with this position.


  • B.S. in Civil or Structural Engineering is required

  • EIT is required

  • M.S. in Civil or Structural Engineering is strongly preferred

  • 1-4 years of structure design experience preferably on transportation projects

  • Self-motivated candidate who has in-depth understanding of fundamentals of structural engineering and a desire to prepare designs and contract documents for transportation structures projects

  • Strong technical skills in steel and concrete bridge design and plan preparation

  • Working knowledge of MicroStation

  • Proficient in design, modeling and analysis software. Working knowledge of LARSA 4D, CSI Bridge or other 3D FEM structural modeling software is a plus

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Work Environment

The selected candidate will work under the direct supervision the Department Manager</p></li><li><p>Bridges &amp; Structures with a focus on highway and railway related structures. Project types will be diverse and include, but not be limited to, new structures, rehabilitation of existing structures, and inspection and evaluation of existing structures including bridges, culverts, retaining walls and railway facilities. The projects will involve a wide variety of structure types, foundations and materials for clients such as IDOT, CDOT, WisDOT, Tollway, Metra and CTA.</p></li></ul><p>Your Responsibilities</p><ul><li><p>Structural design for all project types, including complex bridge designs</p></li><li><p>Planning and schematic/geometric layout of new structures</p></li><li><p>Perform analysis and design calculations according to the applicable design codes; use computer programs as appropriate</p></li><li><p>Prepare plan drawings and details, construction specifications and design calculations</p></li><li><p>On-site inspection, analysis and condition assessment of existing structures</p></li><li><p>Perform Construction and Life Cycle Cost estimates and prepare load rating calculations</p></li><li><p>Oversee project construction administration including reviews of shop drawings</p></li><li><p>Assist project managers with scoping and budgeting for structural work and be responsible for quality assurance of deliverables</p></li></ul><p>The Skills, Knowledge and Abilities We Seek</p><ul><li>BS or MS in Civil Engineering</li></ul><ul><li>Structures track required.</li></ul><ul><li><p>EIT required.</p></li><li><p>Knowledge of bridge analysis, design and detailing as it pertains to IDOT, Tollway, CDOT, CTA, Metra, and local agencies and applicable design codes such as AASHTO and AREMA.</p></li><li><p>Knowledge of structural analysis software including MDX, LARSA and RCPier preferred but not required.</p></li><li><p>Proficient with Bentley's MicroStation® and MS Office software.</p></li><li><p>Excellent verbal and written communication skills.</p></li></ul> Exp.
