Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Structural Engineer, we'll count on you to:

  • Apply structural engineering and detailing techniques

  • Work on projects that typically include bridge (steel plate girder, prestress concrete, cast-in-place concrete, timber, segmental and cable) box culvert, and interchange design for highway and railway projects, and other structural projects.

  • Select standard bridge engineering/design procedures, develop structural details using specialized structural design and analysis software, and perform structural load calculations and assist with geometric layout and quantity development

  • Participate in bridge inspection, perform structural load calculations and assist with geometric layout and quantity development

  • Perform other duties as needed

  • Review, assign work and/or check design calculations, estimates, and specifications produced by junior engineers and EITs

Note that position may be part time.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's /Master's degree in Civil/Structural Engineering

  • 5 years bridge/structural design experience

  • PE is required, SE preferred

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, MicroStation, AutoCAD, MathCAD,

  • Experience using structural analysis programs and bridge design software: LEAP, LARSA, STAAD, or similar FEM software

  • Experience managing junior staff

  • Excellent communication skills and working in a team environment

VIEW JOBS 2/7/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-05-07T00:00 Structural Engineer is responsible for bridge engineering consultant services that include emergency bridge repairs and construction projects that involve structural review and supported structures including tunnels. Incumbent prepares and reviews bridge plans, project designs, specifications and cost estimates for engineering projects; prepares and/or reviews engineering reports and performs engineering surveys; inspects construction and/or maintenance work. Incumbent performs professional engineering duties in areas such as pedestrian bridges, rail trail bridges, vehicular bridges in state parks, multi-use greenways, and at recreational facilities in accordance with sound engineering principles, applicable laws, regulations and standards. The Department of Conservation and Recreation is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Civil Engineer IV. A cover letter and resume must be submitted as part of the application process and attached "as relevant" to the requisition. DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Review and approve payment for work performed by consultants, contractors and sub-contractors, approval of time for reporting/subordinate employees in accordance with DCR policy, state rules and regulations. Prepares and/or reviews plans, designs, specifications, and cost estimates for bridge or structural elements of engineering projects such as the construction or maintenance of parkways, bridges or facilities. Collects and correlates engineering data; reads manufacturers' publications and meets with manufacturers' representatives to be aware of latest technical advances, new products, product pricing, bridge safety hazards and specifications. Maintains records; provides information on applicable standards; operates technical equipment and devices; attends meetings and conferences. Writes memoranda, letters and technical or general reports to supervisors concerning the status of engineering projects or problems. Conducts field investigations to evaluate construction, maintenance of multi-use and pedestrian bridges. Supervise employees of equal or lower grade and long-term seasonal engineering and mechanical operating staff, submit SSTA Time & Attendance for reporting employees, schedule work and plan annual budgets. Reviews applications for construction access permits and makes recommendations for permit conditions. Review construction access permit applications and make recommendations to supervisors. Performs calculations such as those related to construction and maintenance that include quantities and estimated costs of materials by using calculators, computers and other instruments. Analyzes changes in scope of work during design and/or construction of projects to recommend corrective action. Recommends modifications to plans, specifications, and engineering agreements for elements of engineering projects. Inspects bridge construction activities to ensure that work is being performed according to specifications and applicable standards. Inspects, monitors and documents capital construction and preservation/ maintenance work, such as scheduled preventative maintenance. Performs related duties as assigned. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Driver's License Class A, B, C, or D FHWA-NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges Certification Familiarity with Mass DOT 4D Bridge Management System Professional Engineer Certificate of Registration (PE) issued by the Commonwealth of MA Division of Professional Licensure Board of Professional Engineers is preferred (or reciprocity to obtain MA registration). First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) five years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials of which (B) at least three years must have been in a professional capacity, and (C) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, managerial, or administrative capacity, or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions I. An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology, may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.* III. A Graduate degree with a major in civil engineering may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience.* NOTE: The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines, such as construction, survey, hydraulics, design, transportation, structural, soils, sanitary,environmental, drafting, highway, architectural, mining, airport and materials. * Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required (B) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (C) experience.
