Structural Engineer-Houston, TX

Halff has an open position for a Structural Engineer in our Houston, TX location. This position is for an individual with 4 to 7 year of experience in Structural/Coastal Engineering interested in working on ports, coastal and bridge design projects.


  • Will design complete projects such as port structures, hydraulic structures, Civil Structures, and vehicular bridges (Minor building design is a possibility)

  • Will manage production of construction drawings for own work

  • Will review contractor submittals during construction

  • Will coordinate effort with clients as well as in-house engineers and architects

  • Will assist in training less experienced staff


  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Architectural Engineering

  • Master's Degree in Civil/Architectural Engineering with a Structural emphasis

  • EIT License is required

  • PE license in Texas or can obtain within 6 months

  • 4 to 7 years of experience in Structural Design

  • 4 or more years of Structural modeling analysis experience is required, with an in depth understanding of hand-calculations and analysis

  • Experience in DOT bridge design is a plus

  • Experience in deep foundation analysis and design is highly desired, with APile/LPile analysis

  • Experience working with breaking waves, ships and vessels berthing forces, energy calculations is a plus

  • Experience with mooring analysis with OPTIMOOR or a similar package is a strong plus

  • Experience leading structural design and plan production for small projects is a plus

  • Microstation, Revit or AutoCAD training is a plus

Role Experienced engineer who produces structural analyses and/or reinforcement designs for telecommunications structures, and leads/participates in projects under supervision of licensed professional engineers. Responsibilities * Perform detailed structural analysis of original, modified, and proposed telecommunication towers; monopole, guyed and lattice-self-support structures. * Design tower modifications on original and modified telecommunication towers; monopole, lattice guyed, and lattice self-supporting structures and review modification drawings produced for review and approval by an experienced licensed engineer. * Review work of less experienced engineers and peers in the production of reports and supporting calculations for review and approval by a licensed professional engineer. * Perform quality assurance reviews of third-party work for quality, consistency, and cost impacts * Develop analysis tools, standards, and training presentations, and conduct training sessions. * Respond to consultation work order requests through the Engineering Services Program (ESP). * Lead small to moderate sized projects. * Participate in large projects as an engineer Subject Matter Expert (SME). * Determine the cause of overstresses in the tower members and plan for practical and cost effective reinforcement/modification systems. * Produce tower and foundation reinforcement/modification conceptual sketches for the Structural Education/Certifications * Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, preferably specializing in Structures * Fundamentals of Engineering Exam - EIT Designation required * Professional license (PE) preferred Experience/Minimum Requirements * Four (4) years of experience (or three (3) years along with a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering) in performing structural analysis/design on a variety of communication * Working knowledge of codes and standards related to telecom structures (e.g. AISC, ACI, IBC,AWS) * Demonstrated proficiency with structural and foundation analysis tools (e.g. tnxTower, Lpile,Risa 3D, STAAD, etc.) * Understanding of spatial relationships to resolve potential interference issues. * Understanding of structural load paths * Knowledge of bolted and welded connection design * Knowledge of tower hardware and components * Experience or knowledge in tower/reinforcement erection and/or knowledge of tower construction equipment and practices * Experience or knowledge of steel shop fabrication processes and/or knowledge of fabrication shop tools and capabilities Organizational Relationship Reports to: Supervisor Engineering Title(s) of direct reports (if applicable): N/A Work Plans: This role falls into our hybrid work model working in your assigned office approximately 60% of the time (3 days per week) and where you do your best work 40% (2 days per week).
