WSP is currently initiating a search for a Structural Engineer for our Baltimore, MD office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist more experienced engineers in broader engineering activities, assuming more responsibility as experience increases

  • Prepare basic sketches and performs calculations in support of broader engineer activities

  • Gather and record information to be used for writing specifications

  • Assist with bridge inspection field and office work

  • Prepare technical studies and reports

Experience Qualifications:

  • This opportunity requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree from an accredited college/university in Civil Engineering with a focus in structural engineering. Recent Masters Degree recipients are also encouraged to apply.

  • One year of relevant engineering experience through internships or equivalent working knowledge/ experience is preferred but not required

  • Requirements include a working knowledge of engineering design and practices, relevant state of the art computer program experience

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates shall possess an E.I.T. certification

  • Candidates must also be immediately authorized to work in the US

The Aircraft Structural Engineer will become a member of the Northrop Grumman Mission Systems Flight Test team in Baltimore, MD. Flight Test is a unique organization within NGMS that provides the venue to flexibly showcase discriminating capabilities by taking the company's products from the lab to the airborne environment on the highly modified aircraft within our fleet. This business area deals with the design, analysis, modification, integration, ground and flight testing, and airworthiness certification of airborne surveillance and communication technologies onto manned, flying testbed commercial-derivative aircraft. The Structural Engineer will provide technical leadership to and interface with a multi-disciplined team, including other Engineers, Mechanics, Pilots, Quality Control, and Supply Chain. The Structural Engineer will perform a variety of engineering work including design and analysis of aircraft repairs, and of the modifications that integrate sensors and equipment onto aircraft including antennae, radars, cameras, cabin workstations, and equipment racks. The Structural Engineer will interface with the internal Program Offices, functional management, internal and external Customers, as well as suppliers and subcontractors; and will maintain an active involvement in every step throughout the lifecycle once a project is initiated. Responsibilities include managing the technical performance of aircraft modification and repair projects; project planning, cost and schedule estimation; risk management; manufacturing support; vendor selection and management; and project staffing. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: * Performing trade studies, requirements derivation, and establishing the overall aircraft configuration based on Customer requirements * Creating conceptual and detailed designs of primary and secondary aircraft structural components using 3D solid modeling * Writing detailed structural substantiation reports and other technical reports as required in order to obtain FAA airworthiness approvals * Bill of material and data configuration management; fastener and material selection * Reviewing and checking engineering drawings, reports, and cost/schedule estimates for completeness and accuracy The successful candidate will be a self-starter, a team player, and possess the ability to research and effectively resolve technical issues both independently and as part of a large multi-disciplined team. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as interpersonal skills in order to coordinate with a variety of disciplines is also essential. This position also requires the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt quickly to frequently changing requirements. This job may be filled as a Aircraft Structural Engineer or a Principal Aircraft Structural Engineer depending on the qualifications below. Basic Qualifications for a Aircraft Structural Engineer: * Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related STEM area plus 2 years of relevant experience or 0 years of relevant experience with an MS degree * Ability and experience in creating detailed 3D CAD models using Siemens NX 10 or similar software * Ability and experience in performing structural analysis * Knowledge of and familiarity with a variety of manufacturing methods * Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance Basic Qualifications for a Principal Aircraft Structural Engineer: * Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related STEM area plus 5 years of relevant experience or 3 years of relevant experience with an MS degree * Ability and experience in creating detailed 3D CAD models using Siemens NX 10 or similar software * Ability and experience in performing structural analysis * Knowledge of and familiarity with a variety of manufacturing methods * Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance Preferred Qualifications: * Ability and experience in developing aircraft modification data packages and supporting a project throughout the entire lifecycle * Ability and experience in aerodynamic and/or CFD analysis, combined aero and inertial loads development, aircraft stability and control, and flutter * Prior design and analysis experience in solid laminate and sandwich composite structures for aircraft fairings and radomes * Master of Science or Master of Engineering degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related STEM area * Active Secret security clearance * Ability and experience in performing airframe structural analysis via classical hand calculations or Finite Element Analysis * Knowledge of and familiarity with Federal Aviation Administration aircraft certification requirements * Knowledge of and familiarity with a variety of manufacturing methods, including metallic and composite structures Northrop Grumman is committed to hiring and retaining a diverse workforce.
