Performs a variety of semi-skilled duties related to the maintenance and upkeep of City streets, property, and facilities. The hours are Monday through Thursday 10 hour shifts with occasional city sponsored events. Herriman City provides a fantastic work environment and we are a great place to work. GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of semi-skilled duties related to the maintenance and upkeep of City streets, property and facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Reports to the Streets Manager but may receive direction from higher level Street Technicians.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains and cares for City overall appearance including streets, storm drains, open space drainages and street sign issues, while maintaining a professional demeanor in public.

  • Performs general maintenance functions such as painting, raking asphalt, pouring and finishing cement, forming and pouring of sidewalk, curb and gutter, installing fencing, street signs and similar duties; maintains, cleans and repairs tools and equipment.

  • Provides entry level welding and fabrication work.

  • Under direction, transports and deposits various construction materials and/or equipment such as sand, salt, gravel, dirt, etc., performs hot mix patching, storm drain cleaning, repair and construction, snow and ice control, gravel street maintenance, cold mix patching, debris collection, Vactor assistant, etc.

  • Checks and services assigned equipment; performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs; reports mechanical problems for shop repair.

  • Under general supervision, prepares proper barricading and traffic control when necessary for streets and related public works projects under the supervision of certified traffic control technician.

  • Under general supervision, performs a variety of ground maintenance and construction work requiring the use of hand and power tools, such as building forms, framing projects, etc.

  • Under general direction, performs various weed control functions; may operate spraying equipment in applying various formulas of herbicides; maintains spraying equipment assures proper calibration and settings.

  • Provides backup support to other departments especially during events and special projects.

  • May perform cemetery work for maintenance and improvements based on need and skill set.

  • Provides snow removal support on a rotating schedule. May drive trucks and other equipment as needed.

  • Responds to 24 hour emergency calls. Provides flexibility to accommodate emergency calls.

  • May be required to respond to the needs of the operation department, and City emergencies.

  • Performs other duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience

  • One year related experience in maintenance or operations.

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience that qualify the individual to have the skills to complete with the required job duties.

Preferred

  • Experience in construction, cement or maintenance.

  • Basic computer knowledge.

  • Experience in Customer Service.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Must be at least 18yrs old.

  • Requires a valid Utah Driver's License.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, background check, physical and driving record check

  • Required to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL Class A with tanker and air endorsements) within 6 months from date of hire.

  • Must obtain training and certification in Flagging, Confined Space, traffic control, CPR, trenching and shoring and various levels of equipment certification within 1 year of employment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in English.

  • Basic knowledge of machinery, materials, and methods of constructing roads, drainage systems, etc.; safety standards related to road construction; hazards common to heavy equipment operations; equipment maintenance and repair; maintenance equipment etc., hazards and related safety precautions associated with equipment operations.

  • Semi-skilled in the operation of various types of light equipment.

  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor in all types of conditions and weather.

  • Ability to communicate situations and projects to residents and management in a cooperative and professional manner.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED

  • Operate light equipment such as small compactors, cement mixers, pick-ups, tractors, forklifts, 4-wheeler, golf carts, and various hand and power tools as needed.

  • May operate larger equipment based on CDL and ability.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting up to 100 lbs., etc. for an extended amount of time.

  • Talking, hearing, and seeing essential to the performance of the job.

  • Daily exposure to weather extremes and seasonal conditions exist.

  • Common hazardous conditions such as confined space hazards, trenching hazards, traffic hazards, herbicides, fuels and power tools exist.

  • Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, discriminating thinking.
