The Streets Division of the Public Works Department is seeking qualified female and male candidates who enjoy working outdoors in a fast paced environment and wants to be part of the Street Maintenance Team. Primary duties include asphalt maintenance, leaf collection snow removal & emergency response.

This position is part of a progression plan and your compensation will be negotiated based on qualifications and experience. Essential Duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Operates various equipment, motorized and non motorized such as dump truck, loader, forklift, asphalt roller, tar distributor; air compressors, plate tamper and jack hammer while performing routine repair, maintenance and construction on city streets

  • Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, tools, equipment and other materials;

  • Performs basic repair and preventive maintenance on equipment;

  • Manually spreads asphalt, gravel and other materials;

  • Performs leaf collection operating a variety of equipment;

  • Cleans curbs, gutters and ditches;

  • Assists in work zone traffic control set up;

  • Directs traffic at construction sites as a certified flagger;

  • Performs litter collection;

  • Works in snow removal operation as assigned;

  • Uses blue prints, maps & manuals to perform work; interprets written & oral instructions;

  • Completes necessary documentation such as work orders & logs;

  • Performs routine calculations relative to street maintenance;

  • Follows all safety precautions;

  • Participates in training;

  • Communicates effectively and courteously with customers, peers and others;

  • Actively participates in team activities such as problem solving & planning;

  • Works various schedules as assigned;

  • Performs other duties as necessary.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.

  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

Minimum Education and Experience Required:

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED);

Street Maintenance Experience Preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Possession of valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and an acceptable driving record based on City criteria

  • Must hold a valid license for at least 3 years

  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License Learner's permit in 45 days of employment;

  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of employment;

  • Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 6 months

  • Ability to obtain a Flagging Certificate;

  • Relevant background checks including criminal background checks must be completed and approved;

  • Pre-employment physical, drug and alcohol screening.

Successful applicant will perform routine semiskilled and heavy manual work in the Operation and Maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment plant buildings, grounds and structures. Work is performed in team environment this position will work with operations, maintenance and grounds staff. Work environment may be inside or out in extreme heat or cold and has a continuous exposure to disagreeable and severe conditions. This position normally works Monday - Friday 6:30AM to 3:00PM but may be required to work shift work, weekends and holidays and responds to emergencies. Work may include moving furniture, boxes, loading or unloading of supplies and materials by hand. * Rakes bar screens, and cleans and clears basins, troughs and other components. * Handles hazardous chemicals, cleans chemical totes and containers. * Keeps work areas neat, clean and safe for access by others, gathers and disposes of refuse, storm debris etc. from buildings, grounds, along roadway and fence line and disposes of it in designated areas * Performs process tank cleaning operations including; 1) Working with heavy 6- and 8-inch hoses when setting pumps 2) Wash down includes moving, locating and handling of heavy 2, 3- or 4-inch hoses and water cannons with water pressures up to 135 PSI. * Makes minor repairs, reports needed repairs beyond capabilities to appropriate persons. * Removes snow from steps, sidewalks, parking lots, plant roads and around perimeter of buildings, using shovels, snow blowers, utility cart plow or other equipment as required, spreads ice melt/salt on steps, sidewalks around perimeter of buildings * Uses pressure washer or steam cleaner to clean parking lot, buildings and equipment. Custodial Duties * Performs regular custodial functions such as: sweeping, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, mopping, buffing floors, refills dispensers (Soap-towels), cleans and disinfects urinals, toilets and lavatories * Gathers and disposes of refuse from buildings and grounds. * Prepares cleaning and polishing materials appropriate for tasks according to manufacturer's specifications, cleans, * Cleans lobby entrance glass, drinking fountains, walls and woodwork. * Spot Cleans carpet and upholstered furniture. Dusts office furniture, partitions, high and low ledges and moldings, and blinds. * Operates a variety of specialized custodial equipment, such as floor buffers, carpet extractors, wet/dry vacuums, etc. * Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies, materials and equipment * Works from ladders of various heights * Assists in other plant and with other personnel as needed.
