Introduction

The Department of Transportation is seeking a dedicated, dependable, and motivated professional to serve as a Street Maintenance Supervisor for the oversight of the sign installation and pavement marking shops, in the Department's Traffic Engineering Division. The successful candidate manages day to day operations within the sign installation and pavement marking shops, and provides direction and support for projects and programs related to signage and pavement marking. The successful candidate must have a positive attitude and a team mentality, while leading through example, competency, and accountability.

Essential Functions

Manages the Signage and Striping section of the Traffic Engineering Division. Coordinates workload, prioritizes scheduling, monitors resource levels, assigns work, monitors progress/quality, and provides oversight of crews performing technical and specialized work in traffic systems maintenance, signs, and pavement markings.

Supervises several fulltime employees and all assigned work in the traffic control signage and pavement marking shops; including conducting performance evaluations, providing counseling and assistance, coordinating training, administering discipline/termination procedures, resolving issues, and hiring.

Communicates effectively, exemplifies and builds a team mentality, and maintains effective working relationships with others.

Provides a high level of customer service (internal and external), receiving and responding to inquiries, providing information, and providing service in a timely manner, using Cartegraph operations management software (OMS); evaluates and addresses escalated issues and provides solutions; conducts research; prepares correspondence.

Serves as a representative of the City of Tucson and the Department. Supports of the goals, programs, and initiatives of the Traffic Engineering Division, the Transportation Department, other City Departments, and the community; Assists with the implementation of Department policies, projects and procedures.

Maintains system data, activity reporting, program documentation, correspondence and other records related to assignment area.

Monitors and performs work inspections to ensure conformance to applicable organizational, local, state, and federal governmental regulations and other applicable rules and requirements.

Develops and implements programs for the systematic maintenance of the City's traffic control signage and pavement markings.

Promotes a positive and proactive safety culture within the department of Transportation, while monitoring work to ensure adherence to safety policies and procedures.

Ensures that 811 (formerly Blue Stake) operations and other critical tasks are included in sign installation workflow in an effective and efficient manner.

Reviews and oversees the maintenance of supplies/materials inventory; monitors equipment maintenance needs; issues supply purchase and/or equipment maintenance requests; monitors supply levels to ensure adequate inventory; communicates budget, material, and equipment needs to management.

Assists with the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines that address signage and pavement marking issues for the Department.

Monitors the quality and effectiveness of materials and participates in updating standard specifications.

Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Education Level & Type: 6 months post High School

Minimum Experience Qualifications:
At least 4 years of lead or supervisory experience in fabrication, installation, and maintenance of traffic control signage and/or application of pavement markings.

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Microsoft Office products (i.e. Word/Excel)

Selection Plan

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be evaluated on the education and work experience in their employment profile and the responses to their supplemental questions. The highest scoring applicants will then be invited to participate in an Oral Board interview.

  • Oral Board Interviews will be held: November 22, 2019.

Upon completion of all examination processes, the highest scoring applicants will be placed on the Civil Service Employment List. An applicant's ranking on the Civil Service list will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

  • 20% of your rating for education and work experience
  • 80% of your oral board interview

This recruitment will establish a civil service list that will be utilized to fill vacancies occurring within the next 6 months.

Veterans, Native American, or Disability preference points will be added to the final score for those that are placed on the Civil Service Employment List.
