GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Performs required labor as part of a public works crew for the maintenance and repair of City streets and other public rights-of-way.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:

Works under the direction of the Street Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

(Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in a position of this class)

  • Performs required labor as part of a public works crew including pouring asphalt and concrete, crack sealing, patching, painting, or other duties necessary for the maintenance and repair of City streets, alleys, parkways, lots and other public rights-of-way.

  • Performs debris pick-up, tree and branch removal/trimming, snow removal, street sweeping, and de-icing activities as the seasons dictate.

  • Operates vehicles and heavy equipment of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment and materials.

  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment. Performs routine inspection, cleaning, and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or necessary repairs to the Street Superintendent.

  • Installs and/or repairs street signs and performs other duties relative to sign maintenance.

  • Places barricades and assists with the coordination of street closures as assigned.

  • Assists other City Departments as necessary.

  • Performs basic carpentry and maintenance on City-owned facilities as assigned.

  • Performs all duties in conformance with the appropriate safety and security policies of the City of Vermillion.

  • Must be available during periods of emergency for 24-hour call out and are required to participate in an on-call rotation. Such activities may include snow removal, street sweeping, debris clean up, and fallen tree removal.

  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Street Superintendent.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Applicant must obtain a State of South Dakota Class A Commercial Driver's License within 60 days of beginning employment.

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in maintenance, construction, repair work, or related occupation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in maintenance, construction, and street repair activities.

  • Skill in the operation of road maintenance equipment and listed equipment.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outside in inclement weather conditions.

  • The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
