Position Summary:

  • The Strategic Technical Engineering Leader is responsible for leading a highly trained team of engineers to own and drive the largest and highest priority plant improvement, growth, and sustainability projects.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 4-7 experienced technical engineers to identify and implement both near and longer term process improvements, with the overall goal being to achieve improved and sustained safety, environmental performance, higher yields, productivity, better production rates, and higher attainment. Leverage team to support Daily operation as needed.

  • Support plant level incident investigations including leadership of to drive to root cause and prevent reoccurrence. Manage/Support OSHA-PSM elements including management of change, pre-startup safety review, standard operating procedures, and process hazards analysis.

  • Become an expert on the process chemistry, operating philosophy, and the process design basis for the equipment within the plant.

  • Identify and implement process technology and automation improvements including basic control schemes and advanced process control strategies.

  • Assist in development of strategic activities for assigned areas such as STRAP roadmaps, AOP, capital strap, Innovation, and new products.

  • Interface with Supply Chain, Logistics, Quality, Operations, Capital, Process Engineering, and Maintenance to ensure continuous improvement, seamless delivery of customer needs, and value stream integration improvements.

  • Mentor and Coach junior engineers. Lead activities to teach and share critical technical knowledge.

  • Support collaboration/partnership efforts with critical vendors, suppliers, and customers. Serve as the technical expert in those activities.

  • High involvement in the Capital FEL process to ensure design captures best available technologies (robust, efficient), process safety best practices, past plant event learnings, and aligns with volume/yield performance plans of record.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or mechanical engineering

  • Six Sigma and/or Lean certification preferred

  • 20+ years of experience in production, process and/or manufacturing engineering within the chemical, petroleum, or polymer industrial manufacturing environments

  • 5+ years of experience in engineering or manufacturing leadership or equivalent preferred

Additional Qualifications:

  • Proven history of delivering productivity through non-capital improvements and capital projects of all sizes.

  • Deep experience in the fundamentals of production optimization and process design for a broad range of unit operations including reaction, distillation, refrigeration, and fired heaters, heat integration, and process safety systems.

  • Strong process and mechanical troubleshooting experience.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills that translates to all levels of organization.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with hourly union and salaried coworkers at all levels of an organization.

  • Demonstrated leadership in behavioral and process safety as well as environmental compliance.

  • Strong computer skills, including process monitoring and process simulation and design.

  • Familiarity with DCS programs such as Experion, Provox, Foxboro, or DeltaV.

  • Experience in managing and developing people.
