The Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Services (DMH/DD/SUS) is the State agency responsible for overseeing the administration of publicly funded behavioral health system and services for individuals who are uninsured or under-insured.  DMHDDSUS receives funding for programs through federal grants and state appropriations and administers these funds through Local Management Entities/Managed Care Organizations (LME/MCOs), other state agencies, and community organizations.  

The primary purpose of this position is to directly support the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer for the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services. The Strategic Assistant will work closely with DMHDDSUS leadership and other internal departments and subject matter experts to provide project management, coordination, and programmatic consultative work for DMHDDSUS.

This position will include technical and administrative assistance to develop, implement, and manage internal processes and policy development that support the goals and vision of DMHDDSUS leadership as well as operational, administrative support, data collection, analysis, and reporting for the Deputy Director. This position is responsible for critical linkages between DMHDDSUS leadership and will also be involved in key projects to ensure alignment with leadership priorities and reinforce best practices for program operations and policy development.

This is a highly dynamic position and will be responsible for coordinating with various DMHDDSUS program teams and leadership on strategic planning, communications, and program management.   The person in this position will be expected to coordinate closely with the Justice Innovations Team to address needs expressed, partner with key stakeholders, conduct research, and serve on committees, councils, etc.

This person will regularly engage with stakeholders via DMHDDSUS Advisory Committees to take note of stakeholder feedback and identify needs or gaps brought forth by internal and external partners.

This position reports directly to the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer

  • Working knowledge of behavioral health services, systems, theory and source literature in the subject area(s).

  • Working knowledge of structure and operations of agencies and service providers.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

  • Ability to participate in program planning, strategic planning, and policy development.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with professional and administrative personnel.

Master's degree in a discipline relative to the program from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of related experience; or Bachelor s degree in a discipline relative to the program area from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
