Position Summary

Strategic Analytics - Lead Data Scientist

The Strategic Analytics team, part of the Finance organization of the US Firm, executes strategic and advanced analytic projects across a range of functional areas related to the Firm's strategy and financial performance. Our project-based team is looking for a Data Scientist who will be responsible for conducting analyses using advanced statistics and data mining techniques to enable better decision making. This role will have exposure to Firm leadership and help Deloitte achieve its strategic priorities.

Work You'll Do

The Strategic Analytics team typically executes projects across the following areas:


  • Develop and drive complex projects using Advanced analytic techniques. Translate conceptual questions into data-driven analyses to allow leaders to make informed decisions

  • Support Finance and Firm leadership with ad-hoc specialized analyses and provide support for leadership and management meetings


  • Drive large scale, complex cross-functional initiatives in support of the CFO and COO's key strategic priorities

  • Lead efforts to optimize our business operations

  • Identify key indicators of economic shifts, business and/or policy changes and prepare situational playbooks to allow leaders to focus on mission critical decisions


  • Manage the implementation of changes once strategic recommendations are approved by driving cross-functional stakeholder engagement, communications / change management

  • Develop and operationalize reporting to measure impact of implemented changes


  • Bachelors' / Masters' Degree in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering or other technical discipline

  • 5-6 years of relevant work experience in a technical field

  • Experience in programming languages, including but not limited to R, Python or SAS

  • Experience working in data visualization software such a Tableau

  • Strong understanding of statistical analysis, predictive modeling and data engineering techniques

  • Ability to develop analytical approaches to answer high-level questions and develop insightful recommendations

  • A client-service mindset and a desire to take on tough and challenging projects. The scope and variety of work will change frequently depending on the current project portfolio

  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision

  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to "tell the story" and develop executive level presentations with guidance

  • An ability to work effectively across functions and levels; comfort collaborating with teammates in a virtual environment. The Strategic Analytics group is a virtual team with colleagues located across the US.

  • Proficiency in in MS Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.

  • Ability to travel up to less than 10% is required (While 10% of travel is a requirement of the role, due to COVID-19, non-essential travel has been suspended until further notice).

Additional Qualifications:

  • An understanding of finance and financial analysis is preferred

  • Flexible work style. Occasional travel may be needed. A US-based office location is required

VIEW JOBS 12/24/2021 12:00:00 AM 2022-03-24T00:00 The Tableau Manager is a member of the Office of Data & Strategic Analytics (DSA) at Vanderbilt University. The Tableau Manager will work closely with the Assistant Director of Data Consulting to support Vanderbilt's implementation of Tableau Server and Tableau's development as an enterprise data tool. The Tableau Manager will focus on creating the conditions for a broad and responsible use of Tableau at Vanderbilt. They will draw on their expert knowledge of how Tableau works and understanding of how data is stored, managed, and analyzed, to improve and support the infrastructure of Tableau, to provide training and mentoring for a network of Tableau creators, explorers, and viewers, and to provide quality control over the enterprise-level content put into production in Vanderbilt's Tableau Server environment. The Tableau Manager will also explore and pilot more advanced Tableau reporting techniques in order to continually develop Vanderbilt's institutional capability with Tableau. They will advise and support the DSA Leadership Team and colleagues in VUIT in developing the Tableau roadmap for Vanderbilt. The Manager will report directly to the Assistant Director of Data Consulting . They will have no line management responsibilities, although they may temporarily direct interns or student workers on specific projects. The Manager will work with a wide range of partners in DSA, Vanderbilt University Information Technology Department (VUIT), and other VU Divisions. Vanderbilt University is entering a time of ambitious change. With a dynamic new Chancellor and Provost, the campus is poised for significant, positive transformation. Vanderbilt recently created the role of Chief Data Officer and moved the Chief Data Officer's Office of Data and Strategic Analytics (DSA) into the Chancellor's Office. These changes underscore the importance of data to Vanderbilt's future success, and position DSA to support the strategic use of data across all of Vanderbilt. Working collaboratively with stakeholders around the university, DSA is leading the implementation of a data strategy and the transformation of the data culture at Vanderbilt. The DSA team is currently expanding to enable it to undertake this work. The Office comprises three teams (Academic Partnering; Institutional Research and Assessment; and Data Governance and Solutions) as well as working closely with data leads in other parts of the university and with VUIT. Vanderbilt Duties and Responsibilities The Tableau Manager will focus on creating the conditions for a broad and responsible use of Tableau at Vanderbilt. This is a role for someone who thrives on creating something new and getting other people engaged in it. They will do this by being a problem-solver, innovator, and mentor/trainer. Their performance will be evaluated on the basis of the number of people they have been able to train in Tableau, including supporting DSA team members and others with a significant data analyst role at Vanderbilt to achieve competence with Tableau tools; the relevance, scope, and user base for Tableau outputs they have supported which go into production; and the effective day-to-day management of Tableau Server access and use, including coordinating Tableau governance processes and documentation. To do this work, the Manager needs to understand how data flows through systems as well as how it can best be communicated and what tools can be used to extract and share it with end users. This requires both a strong level of technical expertise and an understanding of needs of end users. The Manager will need to work effectively with colleagues to both learn from them and train them in Tableau. Key functions include: Training and support for Tableau * Provide training and support for targeted end users on how to access data, understand data and how to use Tableau. * Develop training material for a range of users, from viewers to creators, to teach them Tableau. * Be the 'go-to person' for employees within the university who have Tableau questions. Analytics and dashboarding * Support the DSA team to identify analytical, dashboarding, and reporting specifications. * Assist with building dashboards in Tableau, from a quality control and support perspective. * Help colleagues troubleshoot dashboards from 'whether the correct question is being asked/addressed' to technical input and aesthetic considerations. * Explore and pilot advanced Tableau techniques, sharing their knowledge with others. * This portion of the role is about supporting people to make things happen rather than engaging in ongoing content production. Part of the success of a project is understanding whether it needs to become sustainable and developing a plan for sustainability. Tableau Server Management * Contribute to the implementation of Tableau Server, particularly with respect to shaping and maintaining the project and group structure. * With guidance, assign users to groups and groups to Projects. * Coordinate the Tableau governance process, working with the DSA Leadership Team to ensure that production workbooks meet enterprise standards. Technology and industry awareness * Understand Vanderbilt's current technological toolkit in the data and analytics space, including which tool is best for which purpose and the benefits / challenges of using them. * Remain abreast of changes in data visualization technology. * Understand the challenges and opportunities that face the institution and higher education in general. Communications projects * Develop and edit documentation to support Tableau users at Vanderbilt. * Support the DSA team to prepare data and analytics for reports or presentations for senior leadership. Process review * Help stakeholders to identify where processes might be made more efficient. Project management and implementation * Working with others, identify and document the steps needed to move from idea to reality, and map out a practical way to implement them. * Other duties as required by the Assistant Director of Data Consulting. Qualifications A variety of skills and experiences may provide appropriate experience and preparation for this role. * A bachelor's degree is necessary. * A master's or doctoral degree is preferred. * Tableau 'Certified Associate'/'Data Analyst' certification level knowledge is necessary. * Certification by Tableau is preferred. * At least four years' experience working in a professional setting is necessary. * Experience of working with quantitative information and data in a professional setting is necessary. * Ability to work with Tableau to create dashboards is necessary. * Ability to manipulate data through SQL is necessary. * Ability to manipulate data in Excel is necessary. * Ability to do descriptive statistical analysis (e.g., compute means, variances, change over time) is necessary. * Training in and experience of more advanced statistical techniques is preferred. * Ability to present and do training to targeted audiences is necessary. * Experience of implementing Tableau Server is preferred. * Strong interpersonal skills are necessary. * Strong communication skills are necessary. This includes both written and verbal skills. * Strong problem-solving skills are necessary. * Strong team-working skills are necessary. The Tableau Manager must be able to work credibly with those with deep expertise in data and technical areas. * Demonstrated experience managing projects through to completion is necessary.
