The purpose of this position is to provide a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled functions in the maintenance, repair and construction of stormwater facilities.

This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Provides unskilled to semi-skilled manpower in the repair and maintenance of stormwater facilities, such as catch basins, head walls, etc.

  • Cleans debris and vegetation from waterways and assists in the operation of the vac truck.   Digs trenches and holes; mixes concrete; places riprap; lays pipe and installs catch basins.

  • Performs all work in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety.

  • Maintains assigned tools and equipment.

  • Utilizes herbicides in controlling aquatic weeds.

  • Operates a motor vehicle, street sweeper, boat, backhoe, loader, jet vac truck, grader, cement mixer, and a variety of hand and power tools.

  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, other division supervisors and staff, other City employees, and the general public.

  • Assists other units/divisions as assigned.

  • Considered essential personnel in the event of a natural disaster.

  • Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.

  • One (1) year of public works construction and maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Must obtain Stormwater "C" certification or equivalent within 1 year of employment.

  • Must possess and maintain CDL class "B" with Tanker Endorsement with an acceptable driving history.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

  • Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes receiving assignments and/or direction from supervisor.

  • Requires ability to read a variety of work order, policies and procedures, etc.  Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.

  • Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.  Requires the ability to learn and understand principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.  Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

  • Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, and to determine time and weight.

  • Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.

  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using motor vehicles and heavy machinery.

  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.  Worker may be subject to danger or risk to a significant degree.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.  Must be able to swim.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

  • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

  • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

  • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

  • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

  • Traffic; Moving machinery.

WORK HOURS

  • Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm (May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business needs of the City.)
