Do you have a background in natural resources or environmental engineering and a passion for improving water quality?  Are you looking for a balance of hands-on field work and time in the office?  Public Works is seeking a Engineering Technician for the Utility Division to inspect, maintain, monitor and document the City's storm water management practices, storm sewer, and sanitary sewer systems.  This position also provides public education and outreach related to the City's storm water management or sanitary sewer programs.

Hiring Rate: $32.67 per hour

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. plus additional hours as required.  Enjoy an alternate summer schedule, Monday-Thursday 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Friday 7:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

  • Performs basic engineering calculations and design.

  • Prepares and/or administers public works contracts of moderate difficulty.

  • Prepares routine engineering studies and reports, contract specifications, quantity estimates and contract payments.

  • Prepares and administers the storm water public education and outreach program.  Develops educational materials and conducts education and outreach for storm water or sanitary sewer programs.

  • Prepares and administers the storm water public involvement and participation program.

  • Responds and investigates illicit discharge detection and elimination.

  • Conducts long-term maintenance inspections for privately owned storm water management practices. Documents inspections, specifies corrective maintenance and conducts follow-up.

  • Maintains an inventory of City owned and operated storm water management practices, such as wet detention ponds, bioretention devices, infiltration basins, permeable pavement, proprietary sedimentation devices, etc. Conducts inspections and monitoring of City owned and operated storm water management practices.

  • Coordinates with other City departments regarding storm water pollution prevention plan documentation and assists with the preparation of the annual municipal separate storm sewer system annual report.  Conducts internal training and education related to storm water management at City owned facilities.

  • Reviews site plans and storm water management plans.

  • Administers sewer service charge billings.  Calculates equivalent runoff units.

  • Receives calls and meets with customers to answer inquiries and educate customers regarding storm water or sanitary sewer utility ordinance requirements.

  • Inspects storm or sanitary sewer systems relative to construction, compliance or complain investigations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Associate degree in Natural Resources, Environmental Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.

  • Five years related experience.

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.

A combination of equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and materials of public works construction.   Basic knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to public works projects. Considerable knowledge of storm water and erosion control best management practices. Considerable knowledge of natural resources practices as they relate to storm water and erosion control best management practices.  Considerable knowledge of sanitary and storm sewer systems.

  • Good record keeping and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to utilize a computer and the required software including experience with GIS, word processing and spreadsheet software.  Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.  Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Ability to work the required hours of the position.

  • May be required to demonstrate minimum competency by successfully passing approved tests.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform the following activities:

  • Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.

  • May be required to work with small quantities of hazardous chemicals and/or respond to discharges of hazardous substances.

  • Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping.

  • Ability to focus for long periods of time on projects.

  • Ability to reach and climb.

  • Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.

  • Ability to walk through rough terrain.
