Today, millions of Americans live within a 10-minute walk of a park or natural area we helped create, and countless more visit every year.The Stockton Parks team at Trust for Public Land (TPL) is seeking a Parks Fellow who is passionate about elevating the role of local parks and open space in addressing some of the most critical health, climate, and equity challenges facing communities today. Our team is dedicated to TPL’s mission to create parks and protect land for people. We work to ensure equitable outdoor access, protect public lands, and increase opportunities for outdoor recreation.Ideally located in Stockton or Sacramento, the intern will attend in-person meetings and events in the field. Work with TPL team will be primarily remote, with occasional in-person meetings in Stockton, Pasadena, Sacramento or San Francisco.The Fellow’s primary responsibilities will involve assisting the Stockton Parks team in community engagement on parks and access to greenspace primarily in South Stockton. The fellowship will include assorted administrative and programmatic tasks and projects. These duties will be in support of the Stockton Parks team, which manages public grants, government affairs, philanthropy, urban park development, and communications. The Fellow will report to the Stockton Parks Project Manager.Responsibilities:

Support the implementation of our campaign to increase funding for local parks in Stockton
Research local and regional schoolyards and urban park legislation, tracking support and opportunities to engage and build relationships with community members and elected officials
Research and track state and federal grant funding and private funding programs focused on increasing equitable access to the outdoors
Conduct research and prepare blogs, letters, fact sheets, internal communications, and assist with press releases and presentations related to parks and greenspace in Stockton
Attend and represent TPL at local/regional public meetings, coalition meetings, and partnership meetings, etc.
Participate in regular team and organizational meetings
Collaborate with other TPL staff on projects.
Participate in regular team and organizational meetings.
Analyze qualitative data and information to identify key insights and recommendations.
Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues, municipalities, partner organizations and others.
Support and engage with other relevant projects as opportunities arise.
Perform general administrative duties in support of assigned project work

Essential Qualifications

Excellent oral and written communication skills for a broad audience (residents, government, local community-based organizations)
Willingness to adapt and remain flexible as projects and priorities change
Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
Passion for parks, people, and working together
Positive attitude, with interest and ability to develop client and partner relationships, being sensitive to balancing project aims with clients’ and partners’ needs
Ability to work independently and collaboratively on a geographically distributed team and with staff in other departments
Detail oriented and organized
Comfort with problem-solving quantitative data
Commitment to the full fellowship term (12 months)

Desired Experiences

Policy and/or government experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in urban planning, parks and recreation, geography, community development or related fields a plus
Experience working with any of the following types of software:
GIS data using Esri software (ArcCatalog, ArcPro, etc.)
Data analysis software (e.g. SQL, R, advanced Microsoft Excel functions, Tableau, SurveyMonkey)
Relationship Management software (MailChimp, Salesforce, etc.)
Experience performing background research, tracking projects, preparing narrative reports, tables, charts and presentation graphics
Experience communicating research findings to specific audiences
Experience with local government policies and structures
Fluency in Spanish
Experience as a community advocate and/or offering community service

Term/Time Commitment: The term for this fellowship is12 months, with potential to extend; applicants must be able to work 20 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends for community events. Occasional in-person meetings will be held in Stockton, Pasadena, Sacramento or San Francisco.Compensation: This is a part-time, non exempt position, working 20 hours per week.
