Position: Sterilizer Service Technician JOB SUMMARY:

To perform inspections, preventive maintenance, repair and overhaul and modifications of sterilizers, surgical lights, tables, sonic cleaners, cart washers, and other equipment assigned to this category.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Administrative

  • Instructs co-workers as required in the performance of job tasks.

  • Maintains records of each work assignment.

  • *Reads and interprets instructional and maintenance manuals as wells as blue prints, mechanical drawings and schematic diagrams related to equipment services.

  • Reads technical journals and literature related to job field.

  • Participates in organized education and training activities to upgrade knowledge and job knowledge and job performance.

  • *Initiates request for replacement parts and materials.

  • Performs any and all tasks within his/her capabilities as may be required to help meet overall corporate objectives.

B. Technical

  • *Operates test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges; ETO leak detectors; multi-meters; and recording, peak reading, and electronic thermometers.
  • *Uses hand tools as required in the performance of job tasks, including pipe wrenches and soldering equipment.
  • *Inspects, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs hi-vac steam, gravity, flash and ETO sterilizers, ETO aerators, ETO supply systems, washer-sterilizers, automatic basket feeding equipment, cart washers, loading carriages, surgical tables, surgical *lights and controls, sonic cleaners, and other equipment generally assigned to the operating and supply areas of a hospital.
  • *Performs spot and routine safety and performance checks such as ETO leak tests, pressure tests.
  • *Within an appropriate interval, should be prepared to assume 24-hour on-call responsibility at a frequency established for the region.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The following performance expectations represent core competency requirements for the position of Sterilizer Equipment Technician.

  • Interacts in a professional manner with all client staff, patients, and co-workers.

  • Maintains knowledge of, and compliance with, ISS Solutions' Service Reporting System policies and procedures.

  • Maintains knowledge of, and compliance with, corporate and client mandated policies regarding workplace safety issues (infection control, fire safety, hazard communications, etc).

  • Maintains knowledge of the clinical purpose, proper operating procedures, maintenance requirements, and risks associated with use, of medical devices for which the technician has maintenance responsibilities.

  • Troubleshoots equipment problems to component level when such troubleshooting is cost effective, time effective and possible is able to weigh all factors to make this decision.

  • Demonstrates proper and effective use of test equipment and is able to utilize information from test equipment for logical troubleshooting.

  • Interprets schematic drawings and sterilize time cycles to be able to link information into a logical pathway for basic circuit analysis.

  • Demonstrates effective equipment assembly/disassembly, and component replacement skills.

  • Should understand dart tests, spoor tests and other biological confirmation of sterilization used by customers.

  • Should be familiar with ETO sterilization, scope sterilizers, OR tables and lights.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be experienced in troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining medical devices, having worked for at least three years on equipment of this type for a shared service, hospital, military, or with a manufacturer. Alternatively, five years experience as an electronics technician and/or working for the plumbing industry may be satisfactory.

  • *Must be able to troubleshoot and repair reasonably complex electronic devices down to the component level.

  • Must be experienced with inventory and ordering procedures commonly associated with repair and maintenance of electronic, electric, electro-mechanical and plumbing equipment.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to work well with a variety of people, including nurses, physicians, administrators, engineers, and other biomedical equipment technicians. Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision.

  • Should be familiar with inspection and maintenance procedures to determine or to ensure the safety and performance of this type of equipment

  • Should have completed or be enrolled in a two year Associates degree program in Biomedical Equipment Technology.

  • *Must be able to read and write English and communicate effectively with hospital staff, vendors, manufacturers, and corporate staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to access and work in confined spaces with little or no assistance.

  • *Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. to chest height unassisted and 60 lbs. assisted.
