Responsibilities

Responsible for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by the department following established infection control practices. Must be conscientious with regard to procedures and capable of working under pressure and interacting professionally with other departments within the Surgical Center. Able to accept new ideas and learn position duties.

Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors

Insures proper operation of all sterilizing units prior to use on a daily basis
Runs biological and chemical tests appropriately. Records results in appropriate log.
Inspects sterrad and steam autoclaves for visible signs of malfunction and reports to Central Sterilizing Lead/ and or Nurse Director
Processes and/or oversees all contaminated instruments and supplies returned to Central Sterilizing
Uses knowledge of sterilization principles to correctly wrap or package items for sterilization
Processes all items appropriately using steam sterilization or sterrad
Maintains appropriate spore testing on routine basis and documents results as required.
Assists with processing department supply charges and any other clerical work related to Central Sterilizing as requested
Works closely with Central Sterilizing Lead and assists with training for new personnel as required
Able to work closely with others in positive ways
Applies aseptic techniques in daily work assignments. Performs general cleaning of department surface areas, racks, shelves, storage cabinets and all storage areas.
Stores all supplies and equipment; stocks Central Sterilizing's dispensing racks
Correctly performs tray assemblage, proper packaging and preparation of all applicable supplies for sterilization. Monitors sterility dates on supplies.
Properly loads and operates all sterilizers, Sterrad and steam, and all general equipment using biological and chemical control tests as required by the department
Receives and delivers surgical supplies and fills requisition requests correctly
Knowledgeable regarding handling and care of instruments, tray preparation and special procedure items.
Qualifications
The Experiences You Bring
High school graduate or equivalent
Certified Sterilized Process Distribution Technician Certificate ( CSPDT)
Current BLS certification (and re-certified annually)
Preferred 1 year of hospital CS experience
Thorough knowledge of medical terminology and nomenclature of items and equipment used by the department.
Knowledgeable of cleaning and sterilization procedures and techniques.
Basic understanding of various functions of the department. Conscientious regard for technical and minute procedures.
Basic computer knowledge.
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
Ability to assess and determine situations requiring an interpreter and to use interpreter services effectively
