  • Position Summary

  • Responsible for processing instrumentation and equipment. Stores, distributes and maintains inventory of required sterile and disposable supplies. Responsible for services supporting primarily for the Operating Room, Inpatient and Outpatient Nursing Units, Pulmonary, Anesthesia Departments as well as satellite offices and healthcare associates outside of Maine Medical Center.

  • Implements critical thinking in a complex work environment. Must demonstrate proficiency in all areas of sterile processing to include decontamination, instrument assembly, prep and pack, sterilization and distribution to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Attainment of Level III is expected to occur within three (3) years from date of hire.

  • Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent preferred.

  • License/Certifications: Attend specified number of inservices and ongoing education to support practice and maintain certification. Current National Certification as Central Sterile Processing and Distribution required.

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years' operating room or central sterile processing experience.

  • Manual dexterity necessary to grasp and handle a variety of small, delicate instruments and sound eye-hand coordination in order to adjust and assemble instruments and equipment.

  • Physical abilities necessary to walk and stand almost constantly and to frequently lift and carry trays and supplies weighing up to twenty-five pounds.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, demanding environment.

  • Ability to handle problems in courteous and tactful manner. Must have communication and interpersonal skills. Work efficiently with other diverse work groups and departments.

  • Communication skills necessary to work well with others and respond to internal and external customers.

  • Maintains full knowledge of and performs in four or more technical areas at a competent and proficient level.
