Job SummaryResponsible for instrument/instrument trays/equipment decontamination, preparation and sterilization, tray and case cart assembly, documentation of all sterilization processes, and delivery of a wide variety of surgical instrumentation and patient care equipment to the Perioperative team. CSPD personnel ensure the highest quality standards are met in accordance with departmental procedures and established industry standards.

Assumes responsibility and accountability for incorporating the vision, values, mission and critical goals of the organization into their job performance. May serve as preceptor to staff.

  • Decontamination of instrumentation and medical equipment: Utilizes chemical agents and automated decontamination machinery to clean and decontaminate instrumentation and medical equipment.

  • Assembles, Preps and Packs Instrumentation: Assembles, preps and packs instrumentation, Inspects instruments for cleanliness, proper function, breakage, and intact ID tape, Assembles trays using instrument tray lists, Locates and replaces missing instruments; identifies and labels missing instruments, Contains, wraps or pouches instruments and sets, Chooses appropriate wrapping materials for size, weight, and sterilization method.

  • Sterilization: Sterilizes instruments following prescribed procedures and guidelines. Challenges the sterilization process using internal, external, and biological monitoring systems, Monitors, reads, documents, and interprets parameters for all types of sterilization processes to ensure proper function and validation of process, Maintains appropriate load configurations; maintains flow of instruments through the sterilization process, Prioritizes instrumentation needs using instrument needs list.

  • Case Cart Assembly and Sterile Storage: Picks case carts according to resource map requisitions, documents case cart deficiencies on daily case cart needs list, Fills case cart needs list prior to case cart utilization, Orders sterile supplies from logistics as needed to maintain inventory. Picks cases, stocks the sterile storage area, and returns sterile supplies to inventory, Collaborates with perioperative sterile core personnel to determine priorities and maintain flow within sterile storage area.

As a Sterile Processing Tech, you will provide services in the decontamination and sterile processing areas whenever monitoring of sterilizers is needed. This is an important role that collaborates with OR staff to provide sterile instruments and equipment needed for operative procedures. You will assist with ongoing inventory of sterile supplies, equipment, schedule completion and communication for the department. Additional responsibilities include performing duties in an independent manner with little or no supervision. Hours are Monday-Friday from 6:30am to 3:30pm with once a month weekend coverage. These weekend shifts are eligible for a weekend differential of $1 per hour, as well as a night shift differential of 18%. Essential Functions Decontaminates, assembles and packages all instruments following established protocols as well as perform necessary repairs, reassembles and stores specialized surgical instruments. Prepares all order requests as necessary for replacement parts for instruments and additional equipment as necessary or upon request of physicians. Maintains a clean and safe environment by adhering to Standard Precautions and Infection Control practices. Staff will don proper Personnel Protective equipment (PPE), follows protocols for decontamination process referencing Instructions for Use (IFU) supplied by the manufacturers. Identifies instruments for all specialties and assures proper function. Follows protocol for repair or replacement of instruments that are not functioning properly. Assembles and packages all instrumentation and sets according to dept. protocol. Utilizes equipment according to the manufacturers recommendations and hospital policy. Operates steam autoclaves, ETO and Gas Plasma sterilizers. Maintains appropriate logs and records relating to the sterilization process, including the Ethylene Oxide Aeration Records, Sterilizer Load Records, and Biological Monitoring Records. Responds to problem calls from the Operating Room and performs preliminary investigation. Determines priority level of instrumentation and equipment requests and other hospital needs. Directs services in a competent and professional manner while assuring OR priorities are completed in a timely manner. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge. Requires current national certification as a SPD Technician, Certified Registered Central Service Technician or Surgical Instrument Processor and relevant experience with sterilizing instruments which qualifies the candidate for the national certification exam or certified registration. Must have mechanical aptitude with the ability to break down moving parts, clean, lubricate and reassemble, problem solve incomplete trays and missing instrumentation and have effective organizational, communication and human relation skills.
