I. Major Responsibilities:

1.Acts as a technical and clinical resource relative to the management of the SPD staff. Supervises the SPD staff to meet the daily operations needs for sterilization services throughout the hospital. Must be able to lead cross-functional teams to ensure team success.

2.Possesses extensive knowledge of instrument processing, purchasing of instrumentation and management of the operational and capital budgets of the Sterile Processing Department.

3.Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.

Operational Responsibilities:

4.Directs the workflow of multiple groups across all three campuses and serves as a point of contact related to the day to day operations and quality of the department. Oversees all operations of sterile reprocessing operations within the three SPD sites in a fiscally-responsible and ethical manner.

5.Enforces and sustains the implementation of policies, new processes, procedures, product conversions, new services and programs in conjunction with the educator and manager of site.

6.Ensures proper operational processes are followed by all staff members of the SPD department in conjunction with the Department of Health JC, OSHA, CDC, AAMI, AORN standards and goals and policies of UMMHC.

7.Ensures proper training of SPD employees. Ensures that monthly in-service programs are being conducted and documented through the Quality/Educator and Instrument Tracking System Specialist.

8.Responsible for the completion of all daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual testing/quality assurance on all equipment at every site. Ensures that reports are received and reviewed with Director and appropriate management.

9.Implements and carries out efficient means of communicating with the OR workforce members and other SPD management to ensure quality and productivity. Conducts regular huddles with staff to communicate timely updates of project objectives and resolve any barriers.

  1. Oversees and directs all needed repairs (equipment/instruments) and instrument purchases for the three sites. Works collaboratively with the SPD Coordinator, Clinical Engineering, and Facilities.

  2. Reviews/updates the implementation plan weekly to ensure target dates are met and barriers identified when assigned projects.

  3. Responsible for process improvements within the department. Able to drive project initiatives and communicates with stake holders to ensure compliance to project deliverables/expectations.

  4. Maintains professional relationships with all departments, as necessary to ensure effective, efficient support to the patient caregivers as it relates to the sterile processing department scope of service.

  5. Resolves issues in a timely and efficient manner.

  6. Submits metrics on productivity/quality and other related reports to the SPD management team and other committees as needed.

  7. Ensures proper coverage and assignments at all sites.


Standard Management Level Responsibilities:

1.Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.

2.Develops and recommends the budgets for the areas managed. Manages activities to assure financial goals are met.

3.Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.

4.Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation, and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.

5.Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.

6.Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.

7.Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.

8.Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.

9.Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.

  3. Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.

  4. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.

  5. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

1.Certification in Central Processing, or as Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Manager (CSPDM) or Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL).

Preferred:

1.Bachelor's degree in nursing, an allied health field or business administration.

Experience/Skill:

Required:

1.Minimum of 3-5 years in large hospital or Healthcare system with progressive management responsibilities.

2.Current management or supervisory experience with demonstrated knowledge of asepsis and sterilization, surgical techniques, instrumentation and equipment, and inventory control.

3.Experience as an educator and a resource in the area of sterilization technology.

4.Excellent communication skills and demonstrated skills in process improvements in all areas affected by the processing and sterilization performed by SPD.

5.The ability to create and maintain collaborative relationships with others of the hospital team.

6.Strong working knowledge of principles and practices of Sterile processing & Peri-operative Services.

7.Excellent communication skills and proven track record of fostering teamwork.

8.Must be knowledgeable in LEAN techniques and utilize those principles in process improvement activities.

9.Formal LEAN training is required within 6 months of employment.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered light. Position requires work indoors in a sterile processing environment.
