Summary: The STEAM Teacher introduces elementary students to a number of pathways to learning and creating including general science, technology, engineering, art and math.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
With that goal in mind, STEAM teachers:
 Will be expected to teach based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and curriculum.Student achievement levels will be tested and monitored yearly using standardized diagnostic tests.
 Help students develop the skills and strategies for scientific problem solving.
 Understand the interplay of the basic concepts of science, technology, engineering, art and math.
 Possess significant knowledge of biological, physical, and earth/space sciences.
 Possess knowledge of assessments as roadmap to academic rigor.
 Demonstrates competence in the use of data to inform instructional decisions.
 Knowledgeable about project-based learning which underpins STEAM.
 Assist students in understanding the natural and human-designed worlds.
 Teach students how to obtain knowledge about nature.
 Show students historical models of biological and chemical processes and concepts and explain howthey have changed.
 Show students what scientists do as individuals and as a community.
 Explain clearly scientific ethic and societal contributions.
 Demonstrate and model how scientific hypotheses are created and tested.
 Lead students through discourse in scientific philosophy – explain the benefits and risks of scientificdiscoveries using historical and emerging examples.
 Relate scientific thought in abstract to environmental warming in specific and abstract.
 Help students understand the concepts that underlie individual scientific facts and perspectives.
 Assist students in developing and applying an objective inquiry-driven mindset.
 Enthusiastically participate in collaborative co-curricular and extracurricular teams; draw students intothese projects.
 Be open to receive teaching feedback and support from teaching partners and administration.
 Demonstrate creativity and economy, while focusing on the scientific method; seek additional sources offunding and materials where appropriate.
 Show students relationships between facts and ‘big ideas’ – the underlying fundamental scientificconcepts and laws that nature adheres to.
 Teach students how to ask scientific questions and how to demonstrate curiosity about the world and itsnatural systems to become scientific and creative thinkers.
 Engage in professional development on a planned and ad hoc basis.
 Proactively communicate with families and students about individual and class progress.
 Promote the school culture and practices, as well as instructional strategies and student rules throughextracurricular and co-curricular activities and staff leadership.
 Praise students in meaningful ways regarding their positive choices and achievements.
 Collaborate with other teachers to support the school’s mission statement and values.
 Develop positive and professional relationships with students and their families.
 Conduct every work and related activity in a professional manner.
 Develop an emergent sense of whether a scientific question and ‘answer’ are fair or unfair according toscientific objectivity.
 Lead students to make educated hypotheses or predictions as to possible outcomes of a process orexperiment.
 Model safety in the classroom with teacher selected equipment for observation and measurement.
 Teach students how to record data in an objective fashion using pictures, writing and charts.
 Teaches ways of becoming an active listener.
 Support the mission and vision of the school district and school.
 Be committed to teaching students in their community.
 Set rigorous academic, time-management and development goals for students to achieve in theclassroom.Other
 Maintains the documentation and reporting requirements of the school.
 Direct supervisor of assistant teachers and aides.
 Maintains and improves professional competence by participating in faculty meeting, team meetings as amember and facilitator, in-service training, staff committees and other appropriate professionalactivities.
 Reasoning ability skill in analyzing problems, ability to exercise judgement projecting consequences,identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations, skill in administering disciplinary rules tchildren, and resolving situational conflicts among students.Position Qualifications:Minimum:
 Loves young people, can whole-heartedly engage in working with and for them.
 Bachelor’s degree in Art or Science Elementary Education and licensed teacher.
 Willingness to maintain a high level of competence, exercise discreet judgment and honorconfidentiality.
 Ability to interact with and maintain positive working relationships with individuals of varying socialand cultural backgrounds.
 Compliance with Indian Tribe drug and alcohol policy.
 Compliance with federal background check.
 Must satisfy health requirements as defines by the Tribe/State/Federal program standards for care ofchildren:
 Successfully pass a pre-employment drug test, upon hire.
 Successfully pass a physical exam, upon hire, to meet the physical demands required in the position.
 Successfully pass a tuberculosis test, upon hire.
 Current immunization verification upon hire see attached immunization requirement (see attachedimmunization requirements, Caring for our Children: Health &; Safety Performance Standards).Desirable:
 Project an image of service and professionalism with a positive attitude.
 Interacts easily as an integral part of the faculty and staff.
 Understanding of the relationship of the Elementary School with the Indiancommunity, and values and supports the mission of both. Experience, familiarity and the ability to work with the diverse constituencies of the ElementarySchool.
 A minimum of three years successful elementary teaching experience.
 Master’s degree
 Licensed in CPR and First Aid.Computer Skills and Business Equipment:
 Be able to effectively use a computer, with Microsoft Office Software, and a SmartBoard.
 Be able to operate a fax machine, printer, cutter, shape cutter, digital camera, and laminator.Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises and provides guidance and direction to teaching assistants, aides, parent volunteers, andsummer youth workers. Maintains professional knowledge by attending mandatory meetings,professional development workshops, and conferences.Physical Demands:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, orfeel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, run, walk for long periods of time, sit , climb or balance, and taste and smell. The employee must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds or more.
