STEM Outreach VISTA

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) employs a civilian workforce of top-tier professionals to safely overhaul, repair, and modernize the U.S. Navy's nuclear-powered attack submarine fleet.

The proposed VISTA project is stationed on a federal naval base in beautiful Kittery, Maine. Kittery is a coastal community with nearby nightlife and attractions. Kittery is centrally located 1 hour from Portland, ME, Manchester, NH and Boston, MA.

PNS has a rich 200 year history and supports a workforce that has been serving for generations. VISTA members will be able to join this team and enjoy benefits of working on a family-friendly, military base. Individuals must be able to pass and maintain a security clearance.

This is a drug-free working environment. The STEM Outreach VISTA will help to pilot a proven successful program into underserved middle schools.

The member will be supported as they create meaningful partnerships with schools, students and families.

The project is expected to benefit more than 1000 K-12 students in low-income areas of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The VISTA Member will develop and present communication about this project to school administrators and teachers. The member will work on a team to train educators and new volunteers.

An existing volunteer network will be available to support projects in the classroom. An ideal candidate will possess exceptional organization, communication, project management, and partnership development skills. While a STEM degree is not required, the member should have an enthusiasm for STEM education.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will work on a team to kick-off new partnerships in 4 middle schools in low-income schools in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The member will utilize an existing volunteer network and curriculum to roll out STEM projects (underwater remotely operated vehicles) into schools.

The member will develop communication strategies and partnerships that will last long beyond their year of service. The member will work closely with the Seacoast SeaPerch team to develop educator training opportunities and recruit and train new local volunteers. The member will have the opportunity to oversee the STEM projects, manage the volunteers who lead the activity, and witness the incredible "lightbulb" moments as students build their SeaPerch.
