Job Description:

The STEM Fellows (SF) work as a team to support first-year students participating in the STEM Academy. SFs are responsible for creating an environment conducive to learning and fostering collegial atmosphere. Staff members are expected to support the goals and philosophy of the STEM Academy. SFs work with the STEM Academy Director.

The STEM Academy is a five-day residential program to jumpstart the training and success of incoming STEM majors. At most fifteen incoming students will be selected to participate in the program.

The SFs primary duties are assisting STEM Academy students during academic and evening sessions to reinforce the academic mission of the STEM Academy. An SF is a role model but will serve and function in many different roles simultaneously, such as tutor, mentor, and instructor. SFs also motivate students to strive toward their highest potential.

  • Serve as mentor during the STEM Academy program and proactively support student participation in courses and other activities. Provides assistance, as needed, in course materials and during evening structured study.

  • Sets an academic atmosphere in the classroom by demonstrating a personal interest in academic pursuits, exemplifying good study habits, and encourages students to maintain an environment conducive to academic work.

  • Works directly with participating students during study sessions and group activities.

  • Works collaboratively with faculty to meet student needs and class objectives; distributes and collects educational materials as directed. Communicates regularly with faculty and coordinators regarding students' work.

  • Assists with workshops on topics of financial literacy, time management, and other college life strategies.

  • Knows, interprets, and supports the policies in the MCLA Student Handbook and follows them personally.

  • Facilitates access to the on-line MCLA Student Handbook to acclimate students to MCLA policies and procedures. familiar with campus offices and personnel in order to refer students to appropriate resources for personal, academic, or social concerns.

  • STEM Fellows will report any and all concerns to the director.

Requirements:

Minimum 24 credits earned at time of the academy.

Overall GPA of 3.0 at the time of application. Preference will be given to STEM majors.

Competency with Microsoft Office applications, Canvas, and Banner Self-Service.

Available to participate in pre-service training: August 1st-August 3rd 2024

Available during the program August 4th-August 8th 2024

STEM Fellows are required to live in the dorms during the training and program.

Valid driver's license and good driving record are preferred.

Additional Information:

This position is open only to students currently enrolled at MCLA.
