Position Summary

This high-level management position is responsible for the overall management of the Dignitary Protection Unit program. This Unit program is responsible for the protection of the Governor and family, and the Lieutenant Governor and family.

This position is responsible for planning and directing the protective details for high-ranking state officials, visiting dignitaries such as the President, Vice President of the United States, cabinet officials, members of visiting trade delegations, religious figures, controversial figures, etc. These protective details are conducted throughout the entire state of Wisconsin and maybe conducted outside the confines of the state. The Dignitary Protection Unit team is responsible for providing direct security for the Executive Residence and Capitol office area. This security consists of supervising the protection of the Governor and his family while at work, Executive residence, and while traveling.

This position partners with other State Patrol Captains and is part of the management team of the Wisconsin State Patrol utilizing law enforcement knowledge, skills, abilities and experience to provide expertise in traffic and criminal law enforcement, policy analysis, short and mid-range planning, program performance evaluation, budget issue paper preparation, research reports on national law enforcement topics, forecasts for future program needs, goals and objectives, policy recommendation and recommendation for program improvement. This person serves as a technical resource in law enforcement to Division staff, the State Patrol Captains in the Bureau of Field Operations' Regions, other law enforcement agencies, legislators, the media, and internal and external customers including the general public.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (81-02) with an annual salary of $126,588, plus excellent benefits. A 2 year career executive trial period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants will meet all the following:

  • Must be a current sworn Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Wisconsin (or eligible for immediate re-certification).

  • Must have graduated from the Wisconsin State Patrol Academy and are not currently serving a probation as a State Patrol Trooper or Inspector.

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience supervising supervisors of law enforcement personnel.

In addition to the minimum requirements above, a qualified candidate will have experience leading law enforcement personnel during high-profile events (including coordination with other local, state, and/or federal partners) AND experience managing law enforcement services and programs.
