Statehouse Reporter Cleveland.com seeks a Statehouse Reporter who have an insatiable legislative appetite, a proven track record of standing up to the powerful and demonstrates an ability to cultivate a roster of trusted sources.

The reporter will sift through state legislative proposals to find the policies that impact Ohioans most; produce watchdog journalism on the future of voting, Democracy and ballot access in Ohio; and become our team's expert on topics readers crave, marijuana and abortion. This position has a daily reporting responsibility that requires the ability and flexibility to juggle multiple stories at once, including the dailies and enterprise pieces we treasure. Ohio's fingerprints are on almost every major political story.

One of Ohio's U.S. senators is the Republican candidate for vice president, and the other is running in the most closely watched Senate election in the country. A redistricting reform measure on the November ballot could chart a new course for democracy in the state. And Ohio's Statehouse regularly produces news stories that see national spotlight.

This position in based in Columbus, OH. The base salary range is $58,000 to $70,000 per year The ideal candidate will have: Degree in Journalism or Communications or related field preferred. 5 years' journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing.

Skilled at building, maintaining and engaging an active audience Proven ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately, handling complex assignments Demonstrated solid reporting, writing and organizational skills Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure Expertise in capitalizing on high-value topics by engaging audiences in frequency and urgency Understanding imperatives of multiple platforms - print, mobile, Internet, etc. Expertise to utilize a broad set of tools to tell stories and engage the audience Leverages relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors Ability to work remotely This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources and cover events.
