The Poway Center for the Performing Arts is looking for experts in audio and lighting and can provide excellent training and experience to those new to theatre! This at-will, part-time, temporary position facilitates production of theatrical, musical, and community performances. Provides technical expertise in all areas of theatre including but not limited to lighting, audio, projection and rigging. Lead staff in the production of performances. Provides guidance and feedback to staff and interacts with clients/partner to determine needs.

Receives technical and functional supervision from the Technical Theatre Coordinator or assigned supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Key Responsibilities

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Assists clients and user groups with the execution of all theatrical amplification and sound effects, including positioning of microphones and speakers, patching and modulating audio mix, equalization, and amplification.

  • Participates in operating audio equipment, including mixing boards; sets levels and runs cues; assists in fabricating instant simple audio designs for users without an audio designer.

  • Assists clients and user groups with the execution of theatrical lighting, including hanging, plugging, and focusing lighting.

  • Participates in programming and operating computer-based lighting console to set and run light cues; assists in fabricating instant simple lighting designs for users without a lighting designer.

  • Assists clients and user groups in the load-in, assembly, and striking of sets, scenery, costume racks, shipping cases, and other materials.

  • Assists clients and user groups with stage scenery during shows; executes scene changes; sets hand props; places set pieces; sets appropriate weights and operates the counterweight rigging and hemp spot lines for raising and lowering drops, curtains, or scenery.

  • Assists in operation and basic maintenance of a variety of technical equipment, including stage lighting and control systems, audio reinforcement systems, projection equipment, stage rigging and counterweight system, stage draperies, and scenery.

  • Maintains facilities, stage areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.

  • Performs basic facilities maintenance, including patching holes, checking fire extinguishers, changing lights, and cleaning restrooms.

  • Monitors use of the Performing Arts Center by user groups to ensure a safe environment; assists in enforcing established rules of facility use and participant conduct.

  • Maintains attendance and punctuality that is observant of scheduled hours on a regular basis.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements/License or Certificates Required

Any combination of the following education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification.

Experience:

One year of backstage theatre or related experience, which is the equivalent of 999 hours for this specific position.

Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the 12th grade.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid California class C driver's license with satisfactory driving record.

  • Within five months of appointment, as a condition of employment, satisfactory completion of First Aid and CPR/AED certificates are required.

Physical Demands

Must possess mobility to work in the a standard theatre and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, and to operate varied tools and theatre equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves work requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance or the use of proper equipment.

Environmental Elements

Employees work in an enclosed theatre environment with moderate noise levels, primarily controlled temperature conditions, and may be exposed to confining workspace and mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

Working Conditions

May be required to work various shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Examination Process

Successful candidates will be placed on the eligibility list, which will be in effect for a period of six months. A background investigation including LIVESCAN fingerprinting, pre-employment physical that includes a drug screening and tuberculosis screening, reference checking, and verification of previous employment and educationarerequired. Applicants will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States.
