Staff/Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer

Summary:

This position is for a highly motivated Staff/Senior Staff level engineer with proven experience in mechanical design engineering. You will be responsible for creating preliminary designs involving automation, optomechanics and fluidic for biotechnology equipment. You will be a key member of a team of engineers, scientists and third-party collaborators focused on developing and qualifying these technologies for Complete Genomics' sequencing platforms. This position is located in our San Jose, CA facility.

In addition to strong engineering skills, the successful candidate will have experience in technical project management; he/she will also possess excellent collaboration, communication skills and a willingness to do what it takes to meet commitments and stakeholders' needs. Experience in analytical life sciences instrumentation is highly desirable.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of electromechanical systems involving automation, optomechanical assemblies and fixtures, pneumatics and fluidics.

  • Oversee, monitor, coordinate, and communicate the activities of partners to meet project deliverable.

  • Develop design and test documentation.

  • Working with Project Management, Quality and Regulatory to identify all critical compliance requirements, project milestones and their interdependencies.

  • Assessment of system level risks, and proposing, evaluating and implementing mitigations.

  • Collaborate with internal and external engineering and scientific groups as needed to ensure an integrated design that meets the system requirements.

  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in mechanical engineering or similar education and minimum of 12+ years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 10+ years of experience with solid-modeling software (SolidWorks preferred).

  • 5+ years of system integration or project management experience.

  • Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and analytical methods.

  • Experience with fluidics and automated liquid handling.

  • Experience with optomechanical design for sensitive optics in benchtop instruments.

  • Experience in the development of complex, precision mechanical systems from concept through production.

  • Design for Safety, Reliability, Manufacturing and Service of high duty cycle, continuous operation electromechanical and fluidics systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS preferred in mechanical engineering or related field.

  • Experience with a plastic injection molding.

  • Design Controls and Regulatory knowledge. Familiar with 21 CFR 820.30 requirements for Design Controls, EN 61010 and EN 60601 3rd ed. and EN 14975.

  • Experience in managing third party development groups and suppliers Specifically concerning specifications and requirements, deliverables and milestones, cost and schedules.

  • Experience designing for high volume manufacturing techniques tooling, fixturing and molding.

  • Design and development of consumables involving microfluidics for miniaturization of bio-analytical processes. Experience with next generation DNA sequencing instruments.
