Job Summary:

The Staffing Assistant

  • Patient Safety Observer has a dual role. As a Staffing Assistant, the incumbent is responsible for the coordination and management of daily staffing for the health system's inpatient nursing units.

    This includes monitoring schedules and unit census in Kronos Navigator, adjusting schedules and assigning appropriate staff to appropriate units, finding replacement staff for call-ins. The incumbent provides Patient Safety Assistant staffing as needed throughout the Health System. On a regular basis, the incumbent functions as a Patient Safety Observer (PSO), utilizing MedSitter remote patient safety audio and video monitoring technology, to remotely observe up to ten patients simultaneously.

    The objective of the remote patient safety monitoring program is to enhance patient safety and improve overall patient satisfaction via a live-only audio-visual stream of the patient to the secure monitoring hub staffed by a PSO. Utilizing MedSitter technology, the PSO will observe, communicate and document behaviors that could be disruptive to the patient care plan. The PSO is an important part of the patient care team, assisting the patient by proactively reminding them of self-care limitations, providing timely feedback of behavioral observations to the bedside care team, as well as providing companionship for the patient. Patients identified as having a high risk for injury if a fall were to occur, are at risk for elopement or have other safety concerns while hospitalized, may require enhanced observation utilizing MedSitter technology.

Education:

Required:

High School graduate or equivalent.

Some College.

Experience:

Required:

Two years related experience, demonstrating strong organizational skills, effective oral communication and ability to effectively multi-task and work independently. Demonstrates ability to effectively function under stress and make appropriate high-level staffing decisions with minimal supervision.

Preferred:

Knowledge of staffing nursing units and Kronos preferred.

The Staffing Assistant

  • Patient Safety Observer for the coordination and management of daily staffing for the hospital�s inpatient nursing units, including BEH East, North, Children's. Verifies the accuracy of all nursing inpatient unit schedules.

    With a global awareness and understanding of unit complements and needs to allocate appropriate resources to meet anticipated unit needs. For RN's LPN's PCT's and Patient Safety Assistants. Assists in managing staff call outs by finding qualified replacement staff as quickly as possible for the unit. Responsible for all float pool staff's time being correctly charged out to the appropriate cost centers via entries in the payroll and scheduling systems (Kronos and Navigator).

Regularly rotates to assignment of Patient Safety Observer (remote) to perform virtual observation as directed by the RN. Provides continuous remote observation and surveillance of assigned patients.

Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the MedSitter application. Provides prompt notification to appropriate clinical staff if patient requires assistance by summoning the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance by communication device. Demonstrates knowledge and skill necessary to provide appropriate communication to bedside staff regarding patients requiring video monitoring.

Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues. Monitors for and maintains patient environmental safety. Notifies clinical staff of potential safety hazards.

Wears headset at all times and verbally redirects patient using the digital 2-way audio feature. Remains engaged with patients continuously during shift. Provides patient with explanations as necessary but does not counsel or provide opinions.

Participates in report with monitor staff when arriving for shift, and upon completion of shift. Reviews pertinent patient information and behaviors. Maintains patient and institutional confidentiality in accordance with related hospital policies.

Documents patient activity and PSO interventions per facility protocol. Effectively communicates verbally or through email and text messaging with all levels of staff in a high level professional manner regarding job-related activities.
