Job Description:

Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Louisiana State University is searching for an Equine Ambulatory Staff Veterinarian. The position has primary responsibility in the Equine Section of the Large Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital and will be expected, but not limited to performing general and advanced medical and surgical diagnosis and perform procedures on horses presented for health maintenance and medical diseases. This is a staff veterinarian position with potentially a multi-year appointment in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

75% Clinical service and instruction. The staff veterinarian will be a member of the equine internal medicine section and be in charge of the equine ambulatory service. The staff veterinarian will provide clinical care in the role of a veterinarian, i.e. examine patients, order tests, make diagnoses, prescribe treatments, and communicate with clients and referring veterinarians, for patients presented to their Specialty Service.

15% Additional responsibilities: The Staff Veterinarian will be supervising and assisting 4th year veterinary students, house officers and clinicians with procedures and treatments, participate in the e-Value assessment system and other duties as assigned

10% Participate in emergency clinical services outside of typical working schedule (including nights, weekends, holidays, and disaster relief) on an as needed basis. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

DVM or Equivalent

Specific Experience: Experience in equine medicine and/or surgery as it pertains to ambulatory service.

Minimum Certifications/Licenses:

Be eligible for Louisiana Faculty veterinary license

Preferred Qualifications:

DVM with 1-5 year of equine ambulatory service.

Special or Physical Qualifications:

Able to answer phone calls after hours from students for issues regarding department. May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays . Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

This position is subject to oversight and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Requires working with or around areas with hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases. Availability to work 8-10 hour shifts.

Essential Personnel

  • This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.

Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, sitting, bending, climbing, squatting, and/or twisting.

Vehicle Operation

  • University employees whose principal responsibilities of employment include operating a vehicle, performing maintenance on a vehicle, or supervising any public employee who operates or maintains a vehicle and positions with an expectation to travel will require an MVR and are subject to drug screens per PM-33/PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
