As a Staff Systems Engineer in the Media Infrastructure Technology group, you will be involved in designing and maintaining computer systems which enable Studio and Broadcast Production workflows. These workflows center on the creation, editing and end processing for delivery of broadcast and distribution-ready media assets. Using a hybrid of home grown & COTS systems, solutions will be architected to meet the requirements of production operations working across many departments. The Staff Systems Engineer will bring a high level of Unix/Linux expertise and will have ideally worked with digital video and transcoding in a broadcast environment. In addition, a thorough understanding of server hardware and OS architecture, advanced networking and advanced storage solutions is necessary in this role. This position is based out of our HBO New York City location and involves support of systems across various US HBO locations.
Design, build, maintain, and support end-to-end systems based on technical requirements provided by application and systems engineers
Responsible for designing and administering scalable infrastructure in both a private and public cloud environment
Automating and orchestrating workflows across multiple private and public cloud systems
Responsible for the management of existing systems that support HBOs various workflows, including transcoding systems and file distribution services
Customize solutions for various software distributions using Docker and Kubernetes
Deploys, manages and maintains Linux and Windows based hardware
Deploys, manages and maintains virtualized platforms using VMWare and VMWare toolsets
Troubleshoots issues with systems (hardware) and operating systems (software) for rapid response to the business units; accepts ownership for system issues and seeks timely resolution
Collaborates with system, storage, network and database engineers to ensure software is performing correctly
Takes a leadership role in scripting solutions for MIT; uses data analytics tools, such as Splunk, AppDynamics, and Grafana for capacity planning and metrics
Proven ability to gather requirements for project management
Participates in all application integration design sessions
Bachelor's degree in an engineering or computer science discipline or equivalent experience is required
Candidate must have at least 8 years of experience in a DevOps or Systems Administration role within an enterprise class datacenter. Background in public cloud (AWS) is required.
Ability to analyze, optimize and troubleshoot system performance of Linux and Window servers
Candidate will have architected and maintained numerous end-to-end systems composed of server hardware, OS, advanced networking and storage providing high performance and robust application platforms
Expert level knowledge of UNIX/Linux kernel and OS architecture accompanied with advanced UNIX/Linux/Windows administration skills
Candidates should have a passion for scripting/coding automation tools and technologies that improve system infrastructure and provisioning
Experience with software orchestration and containerization platforms such as Docker and Kubernetes
Has extensive knowledge of virtualized environments using VMWare; Has had experience designing and deploying virtualized platforms from the ground up.
Must possess advanced knowledge of AWS and related cloud technologies. Knowledge of Cloud Watch, Cloud Trail, Data Dog, Terraform, Cloud Formation and Kubernetes is a plus
Demonstrated Active Directory and LDAP integration
Experience with the configuration and administration of Splunk for alerts and dashboards
Support of MySQL database systems on various platforms
Demonstrated experience with programming languages including Python, Perl, Shell/Bash/SED/AWK; Java, C, C++ programing is also desirable
HBO uses OSPF, BGP, QoS, STP, PVST, IPSec, and VPC. Experience with all of these protocols is required.
Experience with Cisco products including UCS, Cisco 7K & 9K switches; Cisco Nexus & Cisco ACI is a plus
Experience with Palo Alto Firewalls a plus
Experience with SAN/Brocade technologies using multi-PB enterprise class storage
Experience with CI/CD tools (Git, Git workflows, Jenkins) is a plus.
Demonstrated experience using Ansible to automate processes in a production environment
Possesses expert level networking skills; capable of tcpdump, Wireshark etc.
Knowledge of digital video and video transcoding a plus
Knowledge of watermarking & content encryption technologies a plus
The candidate must have excellent communications skills in order to be successful
Ability to organize information and produce technical and operational documentation
Work experience in video broadcasting environment is desirable
Flexible and adaptable; able to work in ambiguous situations
Position requires after hours support. Candidates will participate in a 24x7 on call support rotation
