The Team

The International Localization and Translation team works across Etsy to build a strong internationalization infrastructure and also develop strategic, market-specific product initiatives. We also work closely with Etsy's research organization, data analyst group, international offices, and our search team to identify localization needs and opportunities. As a result, the Localization and Translation team affects every part of Etsy, from our consumer products to our internal tools and processes.

We are looking to hire engineers to help us develop improved tax tools for our sellers, maintain our translation pipeline, and develop localized experiences for our buyers and sellers around the world.

About the Job

  • This is a Staff Software Engineer position on a Localization and Translation team. You will be a major code contributor on the team, and will ensure that we are shipping high quality work and following best practices.

  • You will also support and mentor the other engineers on the team.

  • This job involves coding in PHP and JavaScript. You need to know JavaScript, but you do not need to know PHP.

  • You do not need to know any JavaScript frameworks such as React or Vue.

  • The only hard requirement is experience in web development.

  • You contribute beyond the level of a single engineer by advocating for good engineering practices and mentoring other engineers on your team.

Typical Week

  • We work in 2-week sprints. Each sprint has a few goals broken out into tasks.

  • We're a collaborative team, so usually multiple engineers are working towards one goal, each grabbing a task.

  • Engineers also review each other's pull requests and help other engineers who come into our slack channel asking for help.

First Month

  • You will spend the first month getting familiar with the company and the team. You will:

  • Become familiar with our tools

  • Learn about our practices, such as Continuous Deployment and choosing boring technology

  • Meet people, have 1-on-1s with both new engineers and senior engineers

  • Ship code to production

First Six Months

  • You will spend the first six months diving deep into GPC's work. You will:

  • Grow your knowledge about our architecture

  • Understand our members better by meeting our sellers and responding to a customer support email

  • Own a chunk of work on a project

First Year

  • Here's what you can expect to have accomplished in the first year:

  • You were able to teach what you've learned to others

  • You shipped features that make a lasting difference for our buyers and sellers, and suggested improvements for the future.

  • You drove projects to completion and led projects with your teammates

Must Haves

  • You will work with engineers, product managers, project managers, and designers, all with different needs.

  • You must be able to understand everyone's needs and work with the group to build the product.

On the technology side

  • Experience working with a relational database like MySQLExperience in web development

Able to clearly explain tradeoffs in your work

What You Will Do: * Partner with Commercial team leadership to build and deliver the software roadmap for sales enablement capabilities and features * Act as an active source of engineering talent and work with recruiting teams to build and scale teams across regions * Build reusable technical capabilities to power current and future generations of Climate OTC and customer engagement * Drive global requirements development and analysis * Work with sales enablement, legal and architect teams to review proposed solutions and contribute as needed * Create and manage a delivery plan and partner with stakeholders across the organization on execution * Assess business impact, prioritize initiatives and quickly react to a fast-changing, dynamic environment * Successfully plan, organize and deliver a strong agile software development train * Ensure solid development and release practices are followed that meet stringent audit / compliance standards * Track metrics to measure adoption and effectiveness of support tools * Build self-service/ declarative interfaces for basic configuration and customization for key features * Provide technical leadership, career development, and mentoring to team members * Maintain high morale and empower engineers to do the best work of their careers * Foster innovation, collaboration, and teamwork within the team * Develop metrics measuring customer experience and effectiveness of Knowledge Basic Qualifications: * 5+ years of industry experience in software development or sales enablement technologies, including 3 years in Software as a Service or Platform as a Service * 3+ years experience as an Engineering Manager * B.S. in a technical discipline or equivalent experience * Demonstrated ability to discover, document and deliver a product based on requirements of customers, partners, product managers, and other platform stakeholders.
