Staff FE Engineer

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will join an elite team of engineers building the best possible experiences for students as they study and learn with our writing products.

Engineering Team

Chegg is already a leader in physical and digital textbook rentals, learning services, and online educational assistance. Chegg wants to continue to help students save time, save money and get smarter by growing its excellent Writing Tools platform. Currently composed of four of the largest student citation services in the world,,, Chegg Writing, and, the team reaches over 30 million students from all over the world. In addition, the Writing Tools team is building next-generation writing tools to help students with other aspects of their writing process, including grammar and plagiarism checking.

Must Have

  • You are highly skilled with JavaScript (6+ years)

  • Strong Computer Science fundamentals with competencies in software design, data structures, and problem-solving

  • Expert knowledge of vanilla JavaScript / Typescript, CSS, HTML, and React/Redux

  • Have experience creating consumer-focused products and features

  • An awesome communicator and storyteller that can rally support for an engineering vision and strategy

  • Expert debugging skills across all parts of the stack

  • Production experience with node.js and related ecosystem

  • Extensive experience giving feedback in architecture and PR code review

  • Deep understanding of and hands-on experience with modern development approaches (containerization, using Amazon Web Services, CI/CD, micro-services, modular reactive web applications)

  • Experience with frontend architectures with many shared modules

  • Self-motivated; independent, organized, and proactive

  • BE or MS in Computer Science/Computer Engineering or equivalent training or equivalent work experience.


  • Design and implement features in the single page web application that helps students learn faster and more deeply

  • Work with Backend Engineers to define APIs and then build and ship performant features

  • Work with product and design to determine engineering feasibility and scope of features

  • Provide and own technical vision and mentor other engineers

  • Build efficient and reusable frontend components

  • Help drive companywide frontend standards

  • Diagnose and repair performance issues, and build strategies with others to ensure high throughput

  • Be part of design and code reviews, providing architectural oversight and promoting tried and true design patterns

  • Own decisions around refactoring and strengthening the frontend ecosystem

Bonus Points

  • Experience building complex SPA architectures

  • You are accessibility minded

  • Experience with NextJS

  • You provide a strong portfolio that displays your passion and expertise

  • You are familiar with graphQL

  • You have prior experience setting up testing systems and build-chain tools, such as Jest and Webpack

  • You have a proven track record with visual design and design teams

  • You have previously worked in education or education tech
