SBP is a preeminent, independent biomedical research institute dedicated to understanding human biology and disease, and advancing scientific discoveries to profoundly impact human health. For over 40 years, our research has produced breakthroughs in cancer, neuroscience, immunology and children's diseases, and is anchored by our NCI-designated cancer center and advanced drug discovery capabilities.

Dr. Wechsler-Reya's research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that regulate cell growth and tumorigenesis in the nervous system. In particular, his group studies the role of the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling pathway in the development of the cerebellum and in the genesis of a brain tumor called medulloblastoma.

The Staff Scientist will study the signals that control cell growth and differentiation in the nervous system and how these signals are dysregulated in brain tumors. As the lab's focus is on medulloblastoma, the most common malignant brain tumor in children, the staff scientist will use mouse models to understand the disease and to develop novel approaches to therapy.

A Lab Assistant I position is available in the Diaz-Meco Lab. The overall goal of Dr. Diaz-Meco's laboratory is to study metabolism and inflammation in the context of prostate cancer (Pca), with the aim of understanding the biology of this disease and to identify potentially novel therapeutic targets. Prostate carcinogenesis is a multi-stage process that is governed by cumulative genetic and epigenetic alterations, and consists of intiation, promotion, and progression. While initiation is induced by genetic changes and is irreversible, tumor promotion and progression are long-lasting processes that are susceptible to be modulated and even reversed, thereby providing a rationale for therapetic intervention. The laboratory of Dr. Maria Diaz-Meco has made important contributions in this area. Under specific direction, the Lab Assistant I will perform routine repetitive laboratory tasks, which may include the preparation of laboratory supplies and/or equipment, and other related duties and tasks as assigned.
