Job Description

The Scientist III will work with other talented scientists and engineers within the GC-GCMS research and development group at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Austin, Texas.

How will you make an impact?

Perform research to develop new components and sub-assemblies of mass spectrometers to innovate next generation analytical instruments for use in life sciences, forensics, toxicology, and environmental analyses. The role involves collaboration with various stakeholders in the conceptualization of new products, designing and testing new solutions, and presenting information to audiences of diverse backgrounds.

What will you do?

  • Work with a multi-disciplinary group of engineers and scientists to design innovative mass spectrometers

  • Initiate, plan and execute scientific research with an emphasis on next generation technology, trade secrets and intellectual property

  • Contribute to intellectual property searches and freedom-to-operate reviews for new products

  • Conduct feasibility studies and research to prove product concepts

  • Develop and test new algorithms to make the instruments easier to use

  • Contribute to the product development organization during feasibility, implementation and process confirmation phases, allowing thorough conceptualization and overall design and testing of new products

  • Collaborate with the marketing group in the conceptualization of new products, designing new solutions and presenting information to special audiences

  • Influence the scientific community and market via contribution to patents, publications and conference presentations

  • Provide accurate task and project completion time estimates

  • Evaluate competitive products and new technologies from research institutions, aiming to enhance future products

  • Work with manufacturing and service personnel to improve quality, manufacturability, and serviceability of products

  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned

How will you get here?

Education and Experience

This position minimally requires a Bachelor's, Laurea, or equivalent degree in science, engineering or related field (Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Chemistry) and 5+ years of related experience in instrumentation design

or a Master's, Laurea Magistrale or equivalent degree in science, engineering or related field (Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Chemistry) and 3+ years of related experience in instrumentation design

or a Doctoral degree (Ph.D., Dott. Ric.) or equivalent degree in science, engineering or related field (Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Chemistry)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of principles, concepts, practices and standards in mass spectrometer theory and components is required (such as electromagnetic fields, ionization sources, mass analyzers, RF systems, vacuum systems, electrometers and charged particle detectors)

  • Fluency in English both written and spoken is required

  • Proficient programming skills in one or more industry standard computer languages or firmware is desired

  • Ability to analyze complex data sets and apply in-depth specialty knowledge, creativity and judgment to resolve a variety of complex problems

  • Ability to track and analyze data using statistical functions and generate / test hypotheses

  • Ability to interpret factual information and to solve problems through research of multiple alternatives and experimental design

  • Ability to design, plan and execute experiments in research and development activities

  • Accurate, analytical, fast learner, collaborative, team worker

  • Knowledge of interaction of multiple products and fundamental understanding of how customers use these products

  • Ability to actively contribute ideas to new products and knowledge of Intellectual Property basics

  • Ability to search scientific literature to gain knowledge

  • Technical communication: ability to prepare reports, protocols, product transfer documents and scientific papers; ability to verbally present complex content across functional areas; ability to adjust communication to accommodate audience diversity

  • Record keeping: to maintain detailed records of all work carried out which are maintained as the intellectual property of the company

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
