DESCRIPTION

The Staff Research Associate I will assist the P.I. in designing, developing and modeling a Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) for millimeter wavelengths. Provide assistance in testing the performance of cryogenic bolometric sensors used for the POLARBEAR project.

The FTS requires the design of wire grid beam splitters, which requires the design and construction of a grid winding machine. Under the guidance of the P.I., assist with the development and analysis of the code to assess the performance of a grid winding machine and Fourier transform spectrometer. Participate in the fabrication and design of a small radio telescope receiver.

  • Must be able and willing to travel to Berkeley.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor Degree in Physics; or equivalent theoretical knowledge and experience.

  • Demonstrated background in physics, specifically in electromagnetic waves.

  • Proven experience with optics, polarization measurements.

  • Strong understanding of polarization evolution in optical media.

  • Proficiency at programming in Python and Radio Sky Pipe.

  • Familiarity with Solidworks.

  • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux operating system.

  • Proven ability to maintain and prepare accurate records of all experiments and with handling data management of large sets.

  • Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment,and to effectively and accurately document research procedures.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must have experience with safe handling of liquid cryogens, such as liquid nitrogen.

DESCRIPTION Under supervision and guidance, participate in laboratory research projects to cultivate, modify, and analyze microalgae. Prepare sterile growth medium, inoculate and evaluate growth by cell counting and densitometry, and harvesting cultures for analysis. Prepare materials for and perform algal growth experiments. Perform random and standard mutagenesis and transformation with recombinant DNA constructs. Perform analysis of growth rate determination, measuring lipid content by fluorescent staining, monitoring cell sizes and chlorophyll content, cell cycle stages, fluorescence microscopy, determining intracellular protein localization. Perform imaging flow cytometry and analyze resulting data. Responsible for maintaining complete and accurate records. Prepare plots, graphs, summaries, and reports. Assist in laboratory maintenance and other molecular biology projects as needed, including replenishing lab supplies and washing and sterilization of glassware. ~ Overtime and weekends may be required during peak periods. QUALIFICATIONS * Theoretical knowledge of a life science such as biology or molecular biology acquired by a Bachelor Degree; or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience. * Strong experience with general molecular or biochemical techniques. * Knowledge and experience in general lab protocols and use of routine lab equipment. Ability to follow established lab protocols and lab procedures. * Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements and procedures, and ability to maintain up-to-date safety certification. * Strong experience in imaging flow cytometry. * Demonstrated familiarity in mutagenesis and selection. * Proven experience in cultivation and analysis of microalgae. * Knowledge and familiarity in small scale photobioreactor experiments under simulated outdoor conditions. * Familiarity with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and generated DNA constructs. * Ability to evaluate and analyze data. Ability to accurately maintain records with strict attention to detail. * Proficiency using personal computer as well as spreadsheet and word processing software. * Effective interpersonal and communication skills. SPECIAL CONDITIONS * Overtime and weekends may be required during peak periods. * Willingness and ability to work in close proximity (same building or floor) to research labs, which may contain radioactive isotopes, lasers, and/or bio-hazardous materials.
