Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and application of fair, equitable and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $27.09/hr. - $43.58/hr. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $27.09/hr. - $30.49/hr.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Manage sediment/paleoclimate lab. Perform sediment sample processing of cosmic impact indicators and other related materials for various projects related to sediment records of climate, environmental change and past cosmic events. Hire, train and supervise undergraduate students to do the same. Assist with purchasing, organizing and maintaining office and laboratory supplies and equipment. Assist with literature and correspondence. Assist the PI in communicating with multiple investigators and research projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge and understanding of geologic processes and terminology

  • Good computer skills; proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email.

  • Experience with microscopes.

  • Excellent organizational skills; cataloging and archiving samples.

  • Database management; graphing, plotting and making scientific figures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years Work experience

  • Bachelor's Degree Required

Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties

  • 40% Analytical procedures
  • Independently performs (after initial training) a variety of analytical procedures involving separation of various sediment particles (e.g. spherules) and sediment aliquots using light microscope. Ensures accurate identification of specimens separated for analyses. Responsible for quality control of procedures and data. Compiles data from lab experiments and plots quantitative data.
  • 30% Student and supply management
  • Manages sediment/paleoclimate laboratory. Hires, trains, supervises and reviews undergraduate students working in the lab and office. Orders, purchases, receives and maintains laboratory/office supplies and equipment.
  • 10% Office organization
  • Assists in organization of office and laboratory materials and literature. Expedites correspondence.
  • 5% Communication
  • Assists in communication and collaboration with multiple investigators on various projects.
  • 5% Data organization
  • Assist with producing charts/tables/graphs for publication as needed. Assists with preparation of new documents and manuscripts. Makes library searches for information and prints material from multiple sources.
  • 5% Lab maintenance
  • Routine maintenance of microscopes and office equipment. Occasional use of scanning electron microscope. Responsible for quality control of procedures and data collection. Routine acquisition and maintenance of computers and printers including arranging for repairs. Maintains data inventory, ensures accurate input of recorded data.
  • 5% Lab management
  • Logs in, organizes and properly stores new samples. Follows up with researchers to facilitate small and equipment returns.
