Full Salary Range: The full salary range for this position is $28.04 to $45.11/hour. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

General duties include handling lab issues such as (not limited to) daily lab organization, tracking lab supplies, placing orders, fixing broken lab equipment, organizing food and room reservations for lab events; assisting with research in Denise Montell's lab including making fruit fly crosses, dissecting various fruit fly tissues with a high level of precision, staining and confocal imaging of tissues, analyzing data, and performing various laboratory experiments such as (not limited to) PCR, Western blots, etc.; knowledge of BSL2 safety practices regarding lentivirus and mammalian tissue culture; overseeing laboratory assistants that make fly food for fly labs on campus and maintain fly stocks for Denise and Craig Montell; overseeing undergraduate assistants to ensure proper maintenance of fly incubators, fly stocks, and mite infestation control; working with the financial departments on campus to help Denise Montell manage her grant funding and providing her with quarterly financial reports.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma

  • Some college-level biology coursework

  • 1-3 years college-level lab experience

  • 1-3 years Professional work experience

  • Comfortable working in a lab environment.

  • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel

  • Must be very reliable, organized and have an attention to detail

  • Comfortable lifting heavy loads (up to 50 lbs)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BS/BA degree in biology or related field

  • 1-3 years previous experience maintaining organisms in a lab environment

  • Familiarity with a variety of lab techniques (PCR, florescent microscopy, molecular cloning)

Special Conditions of Employment:

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 50% Lab Managing
  • Placing work orders for broken lab equipment; maintaining lab organization on a daily basis; assigning lab duties to lab members monthly; keeping track of commonly used lab items and order when necessary; helping Denise Montell write Standard Operating Procedures for the lab; updating Chemical Hygiene Plan and ensuring EH&S compliance within the lab.
  • 35% Research
  • Making fly crosses, dissect various tissues of a fruit fly with a high level of precision, stain and confocal image tissues, analyze data, and perform various laboratory experiments such as, but not limited to, PCR, Western Blot, and qPCR for scientific papers written by the lab.
  • 5% Managing Laboratory Assistants
  • Overseeing laboratory assistants that make fly food for fly labs on campus and maintain fly stocks for both Craig and Denise Montell.
  • 5% Managing Undergraduate Assistants
  • Ensuring that undergraduate assistants perform their duties: cleaning fly incubators, setting fly traps, performing mite check on lab member's fly stocks to prevent mite infestations, organizing lab events, and submitting reimbursements.
  • 5% Financial Reporting
  • Working with financial departments to help Denise Montell manage laboratory funding and providing monthly financial reports; tracking spending of lab funds.
