Staff Process Safety Engineer
Redwood Materials is seeking a Staff Process Safety Engineer to join our Environmental, Health, & Safety (EHS) team. The Staff Process Safety Engineer will work directly with the Process and Chemical Engineering, Controls Engineering, and Operations teams while reporting to the Senior Manager of Risk Management & Regulatory Affairs. The role also works closely with members of the project management, infrastructure engineering and research and development teams. The Staff Process Safety Engineer will be responsible for identifying process hazards, evaluating the risk of those hazards, and assisting in the development of effective solutions to mitigate risk.
Responsibilities will include:
Leads factory engineering technical deep dives & options analysis & risk assessments for green field and brown field engineering projects.
Gathers and develops a deep understanding of stakeholder requirements needed to identify potential hazards and operability issues in early factory development and process design.
Defines & effectively communicates factory design safety & hazard prioritization for internal and external factory engineering team
Drives scoping & implementation of engineering safety/ hazard mitigation design strategies
Owns execution of high-quality risk assessments & risk management deliverables
Facilitate risk assessments and work with external consultants/ partners as needed to conduct risks assessments such as HAZOP, What-IF, PHA, and other risk assessment methods
Lead efforts for modeling scenarios and working with external consultants/ partners as needed to conduct modeling such as CFD, FDS, PHAST, Canary, iPRISM, ALOHA, and other risk modeling tools
Leads follow-through reviews/ coordination to ensure identified risks & mitigation efforts have been included in engineering design
Supports technical studies such as feasibility and value engineering exercises related to safety & risk management
Assist in Hazardous Chemical management program as required
Provide oversight and conduct audits for Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR)
Provide mentoring and training for site personnel on Process Safety
Participate in teams responsible to implement new products and processes
Maintains knowledge of Redwood's company values and strategic plan.
Support published corporate policies.
Desired Qualifications:
Minimum of B.S. in Process/Chemical Engineering or equivalent with 5-7+ years of experience in industry
Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams within Architectural/Engineering/ Process Engineering functions to identify and implement PSM engineering requirements
Full understanding of core engineering disciplines and ability to demonstrate skills to manage and facilitate engineering resources
Experience designing manufacturing facilities, Chemical Process, Battery, Oil & Gas, or Semiconductor
Excellent communication and documentation skills with the ability to understand complex problems and distill the message into a clear plan
PHA/HAZOP/LOPA/What-If facilitation or technical evaluation experience highly desired
Functional safety understanding at a minimum and its role in LOPA (IEC 61508, IEC 61511, IEC 62061)
Dispersion analysis, flammability analysis, consequence modeling, combustible dust hazards, reactive hazard analyses
