The VA Ann Arbor Medical Center seeks a full-time anesthesiologist with specific duties to provide care to those in the operating room, critical care units and on the acute pain service. This position is necessary to provide specialized clinical Anesthesiology services for surgical patients and those undergoing other diagnostic and therapeutic non-operative procedures. Other clinical skills may include diagnostic trans-esophageal echocardiography, critical care medicine, and pain management.

The Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System is seeking a full-time anesthesiologist in the Anesthesiology and Perioperative Care Service to join an expanding clinical practice. The Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System provides cutting-edge surgical and procedural care to veterans ranging from common outpatient procedures to complex cardiovascular, thoracic, general surgical, ENT, urologic, orthopedic, plastic and reconstructive, vascular, and gynecologic surgery.

The position requires training/experience in the management of acute perioperative pain including the performance of peripheral nerve blocks under ultrasound guidance; competence in the placement of advanced central monitoring catheters using ultrasound guidance; training/experience managing difficult airways utilizing advanced airway management techniques; experience supervising/teaching residents, fellows and medical students; and training/credentials sufficient to support eligibility for an academic appointment with the University of Michigan. Physician meets continuing medical education requirements, participates in activities to improve anesthesia-related outcomes and efficiencies including regular participation in morbidity and mortality conferences, staff meetings, and resident mock oral examinations. Additional training or experience in cardiac anesthesia and TEE is preferred.

Duties include the provision of clinical anesthesia services in directing/supervising CRNAs or residents in an Anesthesia Care Team Model. Workweek is Monday through Friday with evening, night, weekend and holiday call shared equally with staff anesthesiologists.

Work Schedule: Full-time physicians are expected to complete a 40-hour work week and be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call schedule and shifts subject to change.

Basic Requirements:

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Ability to perform Perioperative TEE examinations (Basic or Advanced PTE exam certification preferred)
Board certified or eligible in Anesthesiology
Fellowship-trained in Critical Care Medicine Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements:
Applicants must meet physical standards for the position.

A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position.

After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use.

Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approximately two hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.

Specifically, the role requires the clinician to perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks associated with patients undergoing Thoracic Surgery procedures, including lung transplantation and complex re-operative esophageal surgery. * The clinician will complete detailed histories and physicals and present pertinent data to the medical staff. * Collects and interprets reports from diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies. Orders tests and prescribe medications. * Performs various diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor surgical procedures. * Assists attending physician in orientation of new resident physicians to the service and assists in maintaining continuity of care throughout the Cardiovascular center/University Hospital. Confers with attending physicians and communicates with other care providers/consultants to coordinate clinical care. * Maintains accurate documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatment. * Streamlines the patient transfer process between levels of care, including writing discharge orders and communicating specific patient needs to team members. * Participates in quality assurance activities, peer evaluations and supports research initiatives involving thoracic surgery patients. Complies with established standards for quality, patient safety and reimbursement. * Utilizes new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignment. * Performs other related duties and initiatives as deemed necessary in the best interests of patient care. Individual may also first assist or provide retraction in the operating room.
