Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks (VHSO) in Fayetteville, Arkansas seeks a board certified staff pathologist in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology who has the skills necessary to act as a consultant to clinicians, other VA hospitals, and to community or affiliate organizations.
The successful candidate will share in providing a wide range of onsite services in all areas of the general laboratory including but not limited to Surgical Pathology, Cytology, Autopsy services, Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Urinalysis, Immunology, Serology, Microbiology, and Blood Bank. The Department processed and interpreted in the last year over 5,000 surgical specimens, over 1,000 Pap smears, over 500 non-gynecological cytology specimens, over 125 bone marrows, and has averaged 6 autopsies over recent years.
The clinic laboratory operates 24/7 and reported out approximately 1.7 million tests last year. Besides the main campus, two CAP accredited VA laboratories function at outpatient clinics, as well as one contract, non-VA at one clinic.
Duties and Responsibilities of the Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist are as follows but not limited to:
The AP/CP pathologist is ultimately responsible for diagnostic interpretation of specimens processed within the laboratory.
Processing of gross specimens.
Processing and interpretation of intraoperative frozen sections.
Provide intraoperative and intra-procedural consultation as requested.
Interpretation/sign-out of gynecological and non-gynecological cytology specimens.
Providing immediate adequacy interpretation for CT guided biopsies.
Ordering and interpretation of appropriate immunohistochemical stains and special stains.
Interpretation and sign-out of peripheral smears submitted for pathologist review.
Participate in a 24 hour on-call rotation service.
Review hematology fluids and issue diagnostic interpretation.
Participate in minimum required continuing medical education (CME) in order to maintain licensure/privileges.
Responsible for timely completion of VA assigned TMS educational modules.
Responsible for diagnostic expertise and sign-out in any area for which sub-specialty fellowship training has been completed.
Responsible for technical director over satellite clinical laboratory departments as designated by Chief, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
