As a member of the Marquette University Medical Clinic team, the RN provides health care to students, emphasizing health promotion and disease prevention. The RN functions independently following medical protocols and orders. The RN serves as a health care resource and advocate for students and their families. The RN also serves in an advisory capacity for nursing practice issues and participates in organizational strategic planning. This is a full time, 10-month position.

Duties and Responsibilities

1.DAILY RN SCHEDULE. Students are scheduled on the daily nurse schedule for nursing care provided independently by RN.

2.IMMUNIZATIONS. As a vaccine advocate, RN reviews vaccine records and administers vaccines following CDC guidelines and State of Wisconsin protocols. Requires in-depth knowledge of vaccines and immunizations to include required, recommended and travel vaccine guidelines.

3.FLU CLINICS. Coordinates travelling flu clinics with the Nursing School for the entire university to promote wellness. RN must be a flu vaccine advocate and have extensive knowledge of influenza vaccines with the ability to teach and oversee nursing students in the administration process.

4.TB SCREENING. RN administers and reads TB Skin Tests. RN must have working knowledge of tuberculosis, latent infection vs. active disease. Must be able to administer intradermal injection and recognize a positive result. Must be able to educate students about positive result and need for follow-up care/medication treatment with referral to TB Control Clinic/Milwaukee Health Dept.

5.TB CLINICS. Coordinate off-site TB Clinics with Dental School.

6.MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION. RN must have medication knowledge and ability to administer oral/ IM/subcutaneous medications from medical order from both MUMC providers as well as provider outside MUMC.

7.STD ASYMPTOMATIC TESTING/EDUCATION. RN must be able to provide education based on information collected from student during visit as well as collect a lab specimen. RN notifies student of test results; if positive result, RN collaborates with medical provider to have student treated.

8.WOUND CARE. RN must have wound healing assessment skills and provide wound care based on medical order from both MUMC providers as well as provider outside MUMC. RN must also have ability to provide triage wound assessment/plan of care.

9.NURSE TRIAGE/STUDENT WALK-IN OR TELEPHONE. RN must use critical thinking/assessment skills to evaluate student subjective and objective symptoms and vital signs. RN must collect and document data and use problem-solving skills to determine a plan of care for students. Lacerations, burns, orthopedic injuries, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, headache, insect stings, rashes and anxiety are common triage concerns.



  1. CLINIC PROCEDURES. RN will perform clinical procedures such as first aid/emergency care, IV placement/infusion, EKG, wound/burn care, ear lavage, eye irrigation, vision screening, pulse ox readings, nebulizer treatments, peak flow measurements, orthopedic equipment/teaching.

  2. PHARMACY. RN will have knowledge of MUMC formulary medications and dispense medications from MUMC Pharmacy as prescribed by medical provider. RN will review directions and pertinent information from medication teaching sheet with student.

  3. PHARMACY MAINTENANCE. RN will monitor medication inventory and order medications as needed. RN will maintain all paperwork and follow MU Marquetplace purchasing and reimbursement guidelines.

  4. VACCINE MAINTENANCE. RN will monitor vaccine inventory and order vaccines as needed. RN will maintain all paperwork and follow MU Marquetplace purchasing and reimbursement guidelines.

  5. MEDICAT EHR. Ability to learn Medicat computer system to access student information and document student care.

  6. TEAM MEMBER. RN will work collaboratively with all MUMC team members. RN will perform other clinic duties as needed to promote a positive student experience in the medical clinic.

  7. NURSING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES. RN will assess, evaluate, review and revise clinic nursing policies and procedures on a regular basis.

  8. INFECTION CONTROL. RN will follow OSHA and infection control measures for environmental cleanliness.

  9. STAFF EDUCATION. RN will assist in the training and orientation of nursing staff as well as providing in-service instruction and updates.

  10. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. RN will maintain competency and enhance professional development by attending in-services, training sessions, seminars and/or conferences. RN will attend staff meetings and participate on committees as needed.

  11. OUTREACH. Develop and/or participate in community outreach programs/activities. Engage with students about health care topics through clinic social media page, tabling at student events and occasional small group presentations on campus about health and wellness topics.

  14. Must exercise professional judgement and discretion in the clinical setting and be sensitive to the developmental issues and needs of a diverse campus population


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires graduation from an accredited school of nursing.

Must be currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Wisconsin.

Individual must be certified in CPR.

Interest and commitment to the educational and preventive aspects of college health are required, as well as a professional practice style compatible with and supportive of Marquette University's mission.

2-3 years nursing experience in ambulatory care

Basic computer skills to include e-mail, Teams meetings, Skype IM

Proficient Electronic Health Record skills (Medicat)

Proficient Fax/copy machine skills

Proficient medical equipment skills to include but not limited to electronic blood pressure/pulse/pulse ox/temp, EKG, otoscope, stethoscope, orthopedic equipment

Interest and commitment to the educational and preventative aspects of college health are required.

Ability to work as a member of health care team with minimal direct supervision.

Nursing experience in college health, outpatient acute care, primary care or public health is essential.
